EB Music Man: Clever Marketing/ Johnny Hiland

EB/MM, always hip and a bit unpredictable.

My take on the Johnny Hiland's use of the MM Sihlouette the past few
years is a unique endorsement deal:

He 'happened' to play it and really liked it... been using one since.
Takes away the stigma of going guitar company to company with
endorsement deals like Jerry Donahue. It is an endorsement of the guitar and the whole company.

Whatever in my 'conspiracy theory' I am glad he went back to
a 25 1/2" scale instrument

Gotta disagree with you there. He was a very active PRS endorser for years, they had a falling out and suddenly he has a new favorite guitar. How convenient.

Seems like a sucky way to act, but I guess these deals help guys like him and Jerry make a living.

I agree. As a matter of fact, the cat was out of the bag already, and
both parties denied the upcoming endorsement, as Johnnys PRS deal
had not quite expired.

Amazingly, the second it expired he signed with EBMM.

Oh well, he is not like Leslie West or Earl Slick, both of whom I can think of
at least 8 brands each they have endorsed.

Generally, I take issue with the musical instrument industries whole "endorsement" scheme. I don't give a rip about who plays what, and would rather not see guitar mags and such cluttered with "interviews" that are really just advertisements.

Just a piece of information.....

Johnny didn't "sign" with Music Man. Music Man (Sterling Ball) does all of his deals with a handshake. None of his endorsees are bound by a contract.

Sterling has said this often. At a clinic in Boston, he mentioned this and John Petrucci sat next to him shaking his head "yes" in agreement.
