Anyone play the bagpipes?

Thinking about trying my hand at them, and wondering about starting out, where to get a good practice chanter and instructional book/DVD, that kind of thing. How much do you have to pay for a practice chanter that isn't complete garbage?

Thanks

Always wanted to try them out. I'm asthmatic, so I probably don't have enough wind.

I have a chanter but I'm not very good at it. It's a hard instrument to learn but with some dedication you can get it. The chanter is also loud haha so I usually practice when no one else is around. I would suggest a chanter that's atleast $50 to make sure that you get a decent one. Look around, its hard to go wrong. :)

I love the sound and thought about it. I tried a practice chanter once. It's a lot of work.

I have a chanter , it scares one of my dogs, saw a bag pipe on c l last week.

On Sat. I purchased a tuba at a garage sale so a bagpipe will most likely follow me home at some point.

Maybe I will just wait for EHX to but out a Scottish Bagger pedal ...

First I am going to try the tuba always thought funk bass lines on a tuba would rock .

Old joke: a bagpipes player is on his way somewhere with his bagpipes on the back seat of this car. He makes a stop at a store and forgets to lock the car. When he comes back out, sure enough, there are two sets of bagpipes on the seat. CS

For the benefit of others in your house....you may want to start with one of these:

http://larkinam.com/ElecChanter.html

That way...you can use headphones.

My band on occaision, plays a song or two with the Staten Island Pipes and Drums. They have a website with an email link. They're really nice and helpfull. I'll bet if you emailed them they'd point you in the right direction.

The chanter is just about possible - I roomed with a guy who was a keen piper when I was a student & could blow a simple tune.

Add in the drones, the keeping the bag filled, and the noise, ........!

Remember, taking up bagpipes will ensure that you never get laid again for the rest of your life. Well, unless you like men in skirts.
