Put down the strat...walk away...walk away..
I came this close to buying another Strat...and quite frankly I still haven't totally decided not to. I stopped into J&R today and they had 20% off all guitars and basses sale. I was looking at a couple of Classic Vibe and Vintage Mod Strats that were already like $249-$299. Tough to pass up on. I started to get worked up about one of the surf Strats with the lipstick pups. But....fortunately my phone rang and I had to get back to the office.

i hope the 20% sale is still going on when you go back (and you will go back).
Strats are wonderous things, and have a long lineage of coolness: Buddy Holly, Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler, Stevie Ray, etc etc etc

Don't do it.
Strats are evil. They make you play "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Pride and Joy". Don't do it, we'll all be sorry. Get you a nice electric sitar instead! You could play "Every Time You Go Away", "Don't Come Around Here No More" and "Paint It Black". |

TWENTY PERCENT?!?
That's beginning to approach an actual discount, unlike the 10%-off courtesy/return-customer that businesses used to extend fairly commonly...but which is now presented so often as a "SALE!"

Weeelllllll, I couldn't resist. I just walked out with a Vintage Mod 70's for $217 out the door.
One of the black ones...with the yellowed glossy maple neck. I'm pretty stoked. BTW....Brookdalebill, my band already has a sitar. Between me and the other guitarist, we have (and can play at least something on) dozens of wierd intruments. He's got one of those Coral Sitar that we've used on Norwegian Wood. |

YES! Excellent choice! I love those VM and $217 out the door is a tremendous price, especially since sales tax is, what 10% in NYC?
I played one here but at $325 plus tax it was a bit too much. By coincidence , I bought a black strat with a maple neck today, as I was eating breakfast and surfing CL there was a USA Peavey and small Washburn amp only, wait for it, $45. I emailed and by 5 pm it was in my car. I'd rather the VM, but I am happy. Sorry to threadjack. Last edited by Joe Sailor; May 10th, 2012 at 11:00 PM. |

In keeping with the "pics or it didn't happen" tradition, here she is. Truth be told, I bought it mainly in a fit of nostalgia. I know its a 70's, but in the 80's, which was my HS and College heyday, this type of Strat seemed to be ubiquitous. Sting used one (loved the whole "Dream of the Blue Turtles" album) The Edge used one as his main guitar for a long time. The black Strat just seemed to go really well with the ever present (in the 80's) jean jacket. I know...I'm a geek.....but I was hell o'cool back in the 80's.

I used to be that's a ll I had was a Strat, no back up or anything. Never needed one. But poor strat died some time ago, valiant road warrior for 8 years. Haven't had one since then, but I am itching for something in a fiesta red. Almost dropped for a Road Worn in black. The relicing was really good, and the way the yellowed plastic looked against the white and black was very cool. It sounded fantastic! Damnit. I got that itch now.

Well I have to say that lately my quest has been to become a minimalist. Mostly for the reason of cost savings. And I have scaled WAY back and have continued to do so. Still the incredible values of the Squier VM, CV and Fender Blacktops even some new Gibsons...it makes it easy to round out a collection of instruments that will cover ALL the bases withing a really tight budget.
I've had this Strat for about a week now...and I'm totally blown away at how great it is. Go on an getcha one! |
