Most likely they're out of phase, ask if your friend did the Peter Green mod (which is essentially rotating the magnets 180 degrees)

Putting the pickups out of phase does give a slight volume drop in the middle position but certainly not huge as the OP suggests with this guitar.

I've done the Greenie mod to my LP and it doesn't impact very much at all on the overall volume.

So I think there must be something else amiss here.

Well this volume drop is very noticable, the treble and middle positions sound as though they are on volume 1 or 2 when

(Ok. Sorry, my phone continues to randomly post mid message)
But it sounds like its on 1 or 2 of the rhythm volume, when the knob is on 10????

reverse the ground and hot wires on one of the pickups.

If pickups are both on (middle pos) and one volume knob is very low (or off), you will get little, or no, volume.
