Should I sell my Lucille signed by BB King??
Hey guys...sorry about so many posts lately but I'm in the midst of a crossroads!!!
I've got gibson 335 gibson lucille tele j45 59 bassman amp homemade strat I'm kinda wondering if I should sell my Lucille that I got personally signed by the King himself...I'm not sure if I'm an idiot or what...but yeah, I drifted into the state of mind 'I wonder what I could buy with that money...' Talk me into it or out of it! Thanks again for putting up with me! |

You'll never get an amount of money out of it that is worth its coolness factor. I have a $70 Rogue brand mandolin signed by David Grisman that will never be worth much more than that. I didn't ask him to sign it because I wanted to sell it, though, I asked him to sign it because he inspired me to learn mandolin and I had a rare chance. Now, when Grisman or King die, these instruments will be worth more (especially your axe), but how many people ever get to own an instrument with a signature by one of the masters? Keep the guitar and save your money for something that pays better.

Okay, I am not going to be polite here-
ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND???????? Don't have any way of knowing for certain, and this may be a little macabre but the value of that guitar can only go up. I would make certain that I had written proof of the authenticity of the signature, and then it would go in my "stash for later" box. I hope that BB has a long and healthy life, but in this world you never know. I have a friend that bought the last guitar that SRV signed. It was a prize in a radio contest. It even still has the tags. He has it in his living room in a locked glass case. You wouldn't believe the money he has been offered for it. Now, he is pretty wealthy himself, but he says that when he goes he wants to give it to his oldest daughter with the proviso that it not be sold. A signed BB King is going to be worth some dough. Be patient.

I'd be keeping Lucille for a long long time. If that signature can be authenticated then it will be worth way more in the future than it is right now. Remember that the general economy always has a bearing on the guitar market as well. And that guitar will appreciate in value over the years in line with how the economy performs.
And anyway, why wouldn't you want to keep something that has been signed by one of the all time greats?? If you want to raise money, sell one of your other instruments.

I have one too.
I keep mine locked in a gun safe and I never play it, this guitar is just an investment for me. My wife says I cannot sell it anytime soon, even tho we have some rather large bills to pay. We're thinking it'll be worth a lot more down the road. Who knows.... In the mean time, my guitar lacks all the documentation to make it "officially" signed by BB. I'm not sure what to do about that.

bb aint getting any younger, save it man.. family harlume.. rock on.
nothing you can do about it not being documented unless you got a picture at the same time which most do. id play her.. she aint gonna be worth any less if you use her. unless you abuse her.. but with the price relics bring in these days from the custom shop the fact its unplayed maybe a big turn off to future guitar collectors. think about it.. people are paying 5k for a beat up new guitar. no way will the powers be make these guitars be worth less.. they will figure out a way to manipulate whats popular. but thats just a conspiracy theory of mine. takes tin foil hat off. chris. |

I had one, and it was the best ES style guitar I ever had, for
tuning stability and tonal variety. It was a great rocker! Mine was made around 1994. I even owned it when I saw BB, but was too shy to ask him to sign it. Missed opportunities. Subsequent sudden separation (say that 3 times) from the missus caused it's separation from me. They are cool guitars, I'd park it under the bed for awhile. |
