epiphone sheraton

I have one of these , a 2005 natural finish and it is a great guitar but the pickups are a bit muddy for that bluesy , rocky tone I'm after.

I have heard that if I change the "pots" to "500's" this will improve things.

Do I just change the tone pots or do I need to do the volumes as well ?

What is a "500" compared to what is in there and can someone explain to me what the difference is ?

Is this a fairly easy change to do, probably a lot cheaper and easier than changing pickups ( I am told Seymour Duncan 59's would be good )

I still prefer my tele overall but a change every now and then isn't bad, in fact it makes me appreciate the tele even more !

I really like the Gibson-Made 50SR/60ST that come in Epiphone Elitist models. They completely fix the muddiness found on the regular Epi models and Artcore hollowbodies.
They can be clean and somewhat twangy for rockabilly bass runs, and they can get a little dirty for old 1940s r'n'b / jump blues styles, and you can turn down the tone a bit for jazzy flavors. Someone online said they have a touch of "Fender-ish tone" to them, and I agree.

I lowered the pickups and raised the pole pieces on my 97 Sheraton and it brightened it up considerably. It's worth a shot before changing the pots as that's pain to do.

Changes where the strings are in the magnetic field...and raising the polepieces focuses the field on a shorter length of the string. That makes for a clearer note.

it allready has 500k pots in it. I rewired a sheraton yearterday. ALL epi's have 500k pots. Even their strat and tele clones. Their single coils are wound and voiced to work with the 500k pots.
