Regarding electrics, you need:
- a solid body - a hollow body - a 12 string - one with humbuckers So essentially you need four electric guitars. Player's choice, but a Telecaster, a Gretsch, a 12 string Rickenbacker, and an SG will cover the bases perfectly. |

BAM! But really, 2-3 amps and 2-3 guitars, if picked well, should be able to do just about anything it seems. That is, if the hands playing them know how to use them. Pedals are another realm, I think. IMO there's room for none to as many pedals as someone desires, depending on what they want to do. There's a guitarist at my school with a huge pedalboard, but he's picked and chosen well enough that he makes the most beautiful swells you've ever heard. He's fantastic for worship. There's also a guitar->amp guy here that you'd have to be out of your mind to criticize, after hearing him play. |

Nothing wrong with wanting a lot of guitars. I just don't suffer from that particular GAS. I would like to get a LP, though...
Now, a soundproof room full of amplifiers and cabinets... that's something I can dream about.

I finally found a guitar I can truly call my #1. Only guitar I've ever owned that I bond with. I used to think all of this "bonding" was nonsense, but I think I was wrong there. Anyhow, I'm with Jeremy here. A guitar to feel confident in and love, and 1 or 2 others as backups, or for variety pickup-wise, is practical for a lot of us.
To those who collect guitars, rock on and enjoy 'em. |

I think you need:
-a good Tele, a good Tele with a B-bender(or three-one P/W, one Glaser, one Hipshot), a good Tele with P-90's, a good Tele with a maple FB, A good Tele with a rosewood FB, a good Tele Baritone, a good Tele with a wiggle stick, a good Tele with a HB in the bridge, a good Tele with a HB in the neck, a good Tele with a set neck and two HB's, a good Tele with acoustic saddles, and a good Tele with three pickups. -a good Strat, a good Strat with a wiggle stick, a good Strat with a David Gilmore EMG set up, a good Strat with a HB in the bridge, a good Strat with a rosewood FB, and a good Strat with a maple FB. -a good Les Paul, or three. -a good SG, or two. -a good 335(plus a backup if that one goes down for any reason). -a good 12 string semi-hollow body w/three pickups(plus a backup...). -a good Lap Steel. -a good electric resonator. -a good Jazz Bass, a good Precision Bass, a good Violin-shaped hollow-body Bass. Did I miss anything? No, I think this will cover me presently. |

I sold a bunch and am down to six but there are many on my want list. However, I decide if a guitar, or amp, is a keeper based on whether I'd be happy with it as my only instrument. I have a lot of #1's.

You are absolutely right.
For me, I just really enjoy, and am inspired by, an almost endless stream of fresh "lumber". I have 3 mainstays, but the other 10 or so get exercised regularly, too. I can only justify my Gretsch, Goodall, and Daion bass. Luckily, I don't have anyone to "justify" to anymore. |

Gosh.......if you have two single coil guitars that you love then that's fantastic.
The most important thing is that you are happy. I think you're scratching about 10% of the electric guitar tones. 10% is stretching it. I know guys with one guitar. I know guys with 45 guitars. I have 34 guitars (so what?) Nothing gets neglected. I play and play and play. Playing makes me very happy. Playing is healthy. Guitars make me happy. The number of guitars in my woodpile is personal thing. I don't think it matters. You should work in a music store and hang out with some of the really cool customers who are 75 years old (and they've played for 60 years). Talk about gear! The happy old dudes are the best. I've talked to old guys with 60+ guitars. Happy guys. They love to play and they shop and buy from time to time and they've gotten older. I don't believe that there are any good rules about quantity other than be patient, live within your means and be fair to your family. If you find yourself happily married and pushing 50 and if you have a nice music room at home because you've stuck with it for 35 years or more then good for you. Guitars are good things.
