Dano's... I've seen some Electra's that are quite reasonable.

Also, what definition of "vintage" of you are referring to. Vintage is usually 20-30 years old. You can find "vintage" squiers and fenders from the 80s for under 500.

Look up brands that manufactured at that Matsumoku factory. They are generally known for being quality guitars.

Your best bang for the buck will be vintage Japanese guitars made from '71-82'. These are considered Japanese vintage and many are very well made guitars. Many were very close and sometimes exact copies of Les Pauls,SG's, Strats, Jazz and P-Basses and many other famous body styles.

Here are some of the brands to look at.

Ibanez,Ventura,Electra,Aria,Greco,Fernandes,Tokai, Yamaha,Westbury, and a few others. You'll find some that you can pick them up for $250 - $900 . The price will depend on condition and the rarity of the guitar .Here's some vintage Japanese guitars I picked up last week.
I picked up these 3 Electras for $250 each out the door. They were all in excellent condition for 30+ yr. old guitars. I picked up the '75 Ventura bass for $165 out the door, and it was very close to being mint condition.

The thing with cheap guitars this day and age is that they generally don't shoot up in price; the value information is too readily accessible. The days of buying cheap and having something become legendary down the line I feel are over, unless you have some estate sale or closet classic luck. but, who am I to say what will be all the rage 40 years from now- plenty of people have sold off jems for something new and exciting.

i just hope my 97 epiphone becomes vintage :)

oh in that same vein and more to your point, any 80's epiphone sheraton is probably worth buying. the early 80s matsumoku ones are badass and under $1000, but even the tobacco burst late 80s-90s Samick ones are coming into their own

I agree with all replies so far. The Peaveys are still a steal despite all the pos ink they get on the net.

The late 70's-early 80's MIJ brands have some models that are excellently crafted, and some can still be had for the street price of a top of the line Squier. As mentioned, the Matsumoku built some that are as good as it gets, especially a lot of the set neck models.

The Electra X-200 series are insanely inexpensive for the quality.

I wouldn't consider any peavey vintage to be honest.

I'd look at hofners. Always a few on eBay from the 50s and 60s. Prices are reasonable. I had a really early verythin, that was a nice guitar.

The answer to the question has to be some of the Japanese stuff from the 70s & 80s. This article on Tokais from 3 years ago might help.

Hofner guitars are usually pretty good and Framus' can usually be found at a decent price as well, both are German made.

70s & 80s UK guitars....Hayman and Shergold....or an early Gordon Smith.....or even older UK vintage like Burns or Fenton Weill.....also Vox and Watkins made guitars as
well as amplifiers....not to forget perhaps the oldest UK guitar maker now gone Grimshaw.
It would be possible to aquire a whole range of historic UK guitars for the price of just one high end vintage Fender or Gibson.....likewise vintage Hofner guitars made in Germany can be found for very little.

Most Tokais will be significantly under $1000!
