Beatles on a budget ?!?

Twangy Doods and Dudette,

Whatcha thunk about this:

http://www.rondomusic.com/harm1minihumfg.html
and
http://www.rondomusic.com/harm1toastfg1.html
$340

Looks Ric-ish in natural, sunburst, wine, and black and sporting a P90, mini-HB, or "Toaster" style SC

or even cooler, in a baratone (!):
http://www.rondomusic.com/harm1natashextended.html
$370

or regular scale with a Bigsby:
http://www.rondomusic.com/product3268.html
$375

They actually have a 3x Toaster on their banner, but I don't see it.

Not a tele, but cool.

As usual, no affiliations, some dealer taxes my apply, YMMV . . .

-capt p

PS - Req'd tele content (plus so cool):
http://www.rondomusic.com/product853.html !

that'd be a sweet combo. BUT . . . does it sound like the Early Beatles (ballpark, not exact)?

still, double bound sunburst with a rosewood board - mmmmmm.

thx.

I think you'd be 6 strings short for early Beatles tones!

This might get you close, but man it's ugly...

Or you could just save up for the real thing. Nothing beats a Ric 12

Agree. No one loves 12-strings more than me but of course it depends on the song and which part of that song.

Also true.
And no one loves RIC 12s more than me but any electric 12 played on the bridge pickup with treble boosted and compressor will get you close.

Y'know, I love electric 12-strings, I love cheap guitars and I love oddities... but that one jumps the shark. Sorry.

Perhaps Agile will rethink that mess one day.

It's hard to do the look of a Ric on a budget since Rickenbacker protects its copyright so well. If you're main goal is the appearance of a guitar that a Beatle might've played in the early years, i.e. looking at the guitar as a prop, the less expensive Gretsch 'Elctromatic' line is where I'd look. e.g. the Pro Jet with Bigsby tailpiece. The double cutaway hollowbody is pretty cool too. These are obviously not quite as "budget" as the Ric-ish looking guitars you posted. New they run about $500 - $700 depending on the model. Used you might score them for quite a bit below that.

George says you don't need 'Tele content' in the 'Other guitars' forum!

Call the lawyers! (Frankly, I'd pay extra for a Ric copy with a 22-fret neck.)

I'd say go for the Danelectro 12 string, which looks more Vintage than that Agile monstrousity and is more affordable than a Rickenbacker.

A big part of early Beatles sound that most guitarists forget to incorporate are flatwound strings. Try a set and play Day Tripper, you'll get it right away. For twelve strings the flatwound set by Pyramid, tho expensive, will get you in the ballpark without an actual Rickenbacker.

I have the blue Agile 12 string shown, the color is much better in person than that picture. I don't find it as horrible as the other commenters here do, your mileage may vary.

It is my replacement for a stolen Danelectro 12 string (sparkle blue), which weren't being made at the time. Both the Agile and Dano have a wider neck than most Rickenbacker 12's (except the Tom Petty and one other model?), I haven't sprung for flatwounds yet. I will probably try coil taps at some point, when I get ambitious.

I also have a Rickenbacker double neck (12 string and 6 string), but it doesn't get much play.

Legal issues aside - seeing as how the price of RICs have gone down in the last couple of years and I think they can be found for around $1100 now, I just don't see the point in spending $600/$700 for a somewhat look-alike.

Just go and get the Rickenbacker.

YMMV, of course.

I've got it in black and it's certainly not a bad looking guitar except for the mirror pickguard and the lack of inlays. I had a friend make a cream colored replacement, and it really helps. Overall, it's still far from perfect, but I'm happy with it. My cravings for an electric 12 string have subsided.
