New guitar, what should I get?

I'm leaning towards either some kind of American Tele or A Gretsch G6120DSW. Which should I save up my pennies for?

I mostly play rockabilly and blues, but quite a bit of surf (Ventures) too

Can't go wrong with a Tele.

If not a Tele, go for a hollowbody or semi like a Casino or Sheraton. The Gretsch would be an excellent choice as well.

Surf? That's pretty much Stratocaster territory, isn't it?

If I could have just one guitar it would be the Casino. It's the most fun guitar I've ever played.

But just starting out, I'd definitely go for the Tele - all bases are covered with a slab.

I like the semi-hollow idea too. Why not an ES-335 or one of its numerous copies? Very playable (with the thinner body and double cutaway, you have easier top-fret access than a Casino, etc), very versatile (ask "Mr 335" Larry Carlton!).

Gretsch, for the Bigsby.

Or get a Tele with a Bigsby!

I have both actually, and if I suddenly became a rockabilly and surf guy, and someone FORCED me to choose... I'd have to go with the Gretsch.

I would recommend the Tele. I feel they are more versatile.

+1

If you don't have a Tele, get one with a Bigsby. If you do (and you should) get a semi-hollow with a Bigsby. I personally think all Tele players should also have a semi-hollow. If I were King, I would decree that it be so.

Instead of a 6120 get a 5120 put some TV Jones pups in it and buy a CV tele. You would then have two great guitars and maybe some money left over.
