Need recommendation from audiophiles

So Im just starting up in my vinyl collection. I have a nice ( new ) "pro-ject" turntable, a 1978( i think) kenwood kr6600 which needs a little cleaning to get it up to perfect working condition, and a set of old but decent speakers.

I was looking on kijiji for some "vintage" or just period correct speakers to complete my set up. I found a set of "original large advent" speakers. The guy is a serious collector and has restored these to new. Auditions are welcome. I read some reviews on these and they are apparently a very good speaker for the money. He wants $275, which was a bit more than I had planned on spending, and is not willing to budge. Thoughts?

As long as the surrounds are done, they"ll sound great. Get them.

$275 is a steep price for these old loudspeakers - which is OK, as long as the visual appeal of the speakers is what is most important to you.
In terms of sonic quality, the Advents will be probably be boxy sounding compared to a decent modern speaker in this price range.

Also, while perhaps not as retro cool looking, a far superior sounding speaker solution in this price range on ebay are the 20 year old larger Paradigm floor standing models.

Since you can audition them, you will know what you are getting into.

Be sure to bring a nice selection of varied source material that you are very familiar with.

Some solo acoustic piano, guitar, or guitar and vocal, and a chamber music piece as well as something with brass should be in your selection.

Just be sure he has his pre amp or receiver tone controls disengaged or set flat and no loudness engaged.

I doubt this fellow will pull any shenanigans, but these are old sales tricks, as are placing the speakers right against the wall or in corners to extend the bass.

Is your phono cartridge in good shape?

hi-fi is as subjective as the next thing

listen to the set up first and decide how much you want to pay

your price should be based on knowing what you want and how much it's worth to you
