Tim McGraw on Austin City Limits
Watched most of it last weekend. GREAT, tight band! (prolly more rock than anything).
Anyhoot, not a rant but an observation that TM relies heavily on the the vocal pitch correction mode. It's not quite subtle. My question is, can he really carry a tune, strongly? .

I'll dial into the Opry or just about any country music on TV, just to catch the musicians. Even if you don't care for the singer, those Nashville cats can sure pick. You'll often hear some excellent guitar (and steel) stuff. Don't know about his voice, but Tim McGraw sure gets alot of mileage out of his black hat and tight jeans.

Well, they already had Arcade Fire on, so this wasn't much of a stretch.

TM not my cup a tea either, but I had to watch after noticing his vocal autotune was so prominent.
My thinking was, this is silly, the man prolly sounds across-the-board-weak in his vocal range w/o autotune. But, he is a BIG artist. They send him out with a sharp band and maybe that mitigates the singing ruse. .

I saw Death Cab For Cutie on/at ACL.
They were good, too. ACL does stuff other than country. TM has sold a lot of records, so he's doing something right. Time marches on, people like all kinds of music. Things change. That's life. It's cool. |

That is my point exactly, ACL used to be a showcase for real musicians who for the most part DIDN'T sell millions of records or who weren't all over mainstream radio and MTV, regardless of genre. It's where musicians like Albert Collins, Roy Buchanan, Waylon Jennings, Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, Danny Gatton, Buddy Guy, Queen Ida, Son Volt, Eliza Gilkyson, Roy Clark, Jerry Reed, Steve Earle, TONS of Texas musicians and so many more got the national exposure they would otherwise never would in the mainstream. Since 2005, which is not coincidentally around the time all the skyscrapers and hipsters started showing up, the acts have reflected the way Austin now markets itself, concerned more with what is trendy and cool than with anything of substance or diversity.

Yup, my little "hometown" is growing up.
It's still good, but it was (way) better in the 60s-80s. Sometimes when I'm acting my age (cranky), I call Austin "San Diego East". The money people have rolled in, and the High End Retail/condos/McMansions have rolled in, with the money. Kinda gross, but inevitable. Back to ACL, I'll keep watching! |

The problem now is, you also have PBS television seeing how lucrative mainstream programs are like antiques roadshow so why not go for more mainstream artists to get a larger crowd (once in a while, hopefully)?
I for one wouldn't mind it as long as they keep showing the musicians playing and not turning it into a video for CMT...

Haven't really watched ACL in years. If I wanted to see the people they usually feature, I'd watch the CMA awards. I have started trying to catch "Bluegrass Underground," though...some acts are kinda "garage-y" but at least they're fresh. Oh, and they don't use auto-tune...
Oh, yeah, Tim McGraw...I don't like his singing, especially that weird "country" drawl that all Nashville singers use these days. I've never heard anyone talk with the accent that those people adopt when they sing. Okay, I'm done now... |
