I think John is one of the finest lyricists ever...sorta like Towns Van Zandt but with a sense of humor. Kristofferson and Croce's got nothing on him.

I heard of him first through the " Lost dogs and mixed blessings" album. "Ain't hurtin nobody" and "Same thing happened to me" are still great songs. Bought me a couple of albums. Good stuff.

It takes a special kind of songwriter that can both crack you up or make you cry at the same show

God yes.
John Prine. Some mighty solid finger pickin' for a 2-finger style... great song writing, great feel, and delivery, and a natural ability to play with other musicians. And showcased some great players on stage and on his recordings. I'll probably always love his first three LPs the most-- Dave Bromberg, Steve Goodman, Dave Prine, Leo LeBlanc, Grady Martin.... Amazing stuff there, on so many levels. I got a lotta love for the Sound of Loneliness.... |
