John Mellencamp
Hello all,
Not a guitar question but I thought I'd ask here because I'll bet somebody here would know. The sonf Jack & Diane has a longer version I've heard that has a ton of drumming in it. The drumming is really great, and promanent. In fact the whole song is full of great drumming. I can't find it in all music .com etc I'm hoping somebody here will know the answer because I'd like to get a copy of it . Thanks Gary |

Ah, a trip down memory lane seeing that 'John Cougar.'
We used to motor our boat over and cruise his house on Lake Monroe, playing that song. We wondered how quickly he'd gotten tired of idiots like us. Much love for ya, Johnny Hoosier. Much love.

Mellencamp
No actually there is a version of this song that has an incredible drum intro as well as sevral drum breaks through out. Plus some variations on the instrumentation in the song. Allot bigger / stadium / rock rally it's still John "Cogar" Mellencamp but more of a Rock Opera
Anybody out there? Gary |

Are you thinking of "I need a lover" ?
You mean he has another song like that ? I really liked his Big Daddy record but the recent movie/special/doc about him confirmed his massive eccentricity. Seems faaaar removed from a regular guy. Maybe that's why the Meg Ryan thing happened - birds of a feather...

"Are you thinking of "I need a lover" ?"
i'll bet he is. the instrumental intro, with plenty of drums, is 2:30 long before the vocals come in, then there is a very cool drum part at about 4:25

You're right. Kenny Aronoff told me that Mellencamp is one of the most intense human beings he's ever known. Very hard to deal with. Kenny was always playing politics with John, and Kenny made those records happen. Ever notice how Mellencamp never had another hit after Kenny left the band?

A covers band I was in years ago did a couple of John's songs.
"Small Town' was one of them. As the drummer, I had to put a bit more effort & technique into those songs after the usual 'run of the mill' setlist. Kept me awake ! |

Agreed "The Aronoff Years" were his best. Key West Intermezzo (I Saw You First) a post Kenny song and was a hit. IMO one of the best songs he's composed

Is Aronoff the cat who was responsible for all the cool Stones-ey rhythms in a lot of the earlier stuff, and the crazy falling-off-a-cliff sounds on tunes like "When The Walls Come Tumblin' Down"? If so, my hat off to him, that's some great playing
