Punk Rock
So who here listens to Punk. I know punk is supposed to be a bunch of crappy musicians, and even crappier music, but I love it. Maybe I just suck at guitar

I not a huge punk fan, but I did go and see Refused a couple of weeks ago in Toronto. First hardcore punk show I've been to. My friend had an extra ticket and asked me to go.
I really liked it and thought the music was fantastic, definitely worth checking out. |

When I think of punk, I think of this:

Can't believe I'm the first to post this:
For some reason, the punk purists want to write this band out of the history. Probably because they wrote great songs: And who can forget the Dead Kennedys? |

The really good Clash stuff and ..er.. the Pixies .. a little bit of Green Day. Sloan has some good stuff. I don't have any but Social Distortion has some cool stuff too.

Don't forget the Real Kids from Boston, their first album was pure punk garage rock and the young John Felice was also member of the Modern Lovers in the early '70s. Some of the Modern Lovers became famous later with others bands, the Cars, the Talking Heads.

Yeah, since the beginning there have been punk bands that were hacks slashing out 2-3 chords (all they knew) with someone shouting out snotty lyrics over the top. But also since the beginning there have been punk bands who were very tight and which contained great players. Bad Brains, Minutemen, Die Kreuzen, Mission of Burma, Meat Puppets, Beefeater, X and many, many others both from the US and elsewhere had some excellent musicians. The "two sloppy chords and a screamer" meme that people toss about is for those who never really knew or understood punk but based their opinion of it on a very tiny bit of the music that they just summarily wrote off. |
