A master class in funk...

...in a little more than three minutes. Doesn't matter what instrument you play; even if you "only" sing, there's a lot to learn here.

Another master class, especially in bass!

For good or bad, I always try to be Mice Elf.

Another lesson. Listen to how Stevie plays the clavinet like a guitar. Funkiest-ever guitar performance not involving a guitar. I think it's what makes the song.

I should listen to more funk. It makes me feel good in the same way blues music does.

I always thought this quite funky. And to think they are from Scotland ...

This simply proves that, not only can you not fake the funk, you can't escape it. If it wants you, it will find you. No matter where you live, the funk will find you.

I almost posted this instead of Superstition. The swirling electric piano at the start is amazing. The clavinet riff in Superstition just edges it out. But man, I do love the post-chorus synth-and-voice breaks in Living for the City.

Love the Funk!!

Been playing these songs all day at work, thanks for the selection....

Just thought I would add one I hadn't seen posted....a bit more rocky / disco orientated but still a great funk song!

Love it! Reminds me of the recent TV tribute to Lionel Ritchie, a tie-in with his country duets album. I watched a good bit of it at my parents' house after dinner, then drove home thinking "I've got to get me an album of Lionel's greatest hits."

Well, after looking at what was available, it became clear what I really wanted was a Commodores' greatest hits album. That's when all the "Lionel Ritchie" hits I liked were recorded: when he was with them. So that's what I got.

That video's cool. I knew Lionel didn't sing "Brick House," but I had no idea he played sax. (That's assuming he's really playing, I guess....)

Another funk king: George Clinton..

A master arranger: vocals and instruments..sure, his lyrics are silly, but so are Zappa's.

Listen to the harmonies and the rhythms and sounds..very inventive.
