Thanks to Johnny for mentioning it, and 'sixties' for helping us get it straight. A side note - I listened to Maybelline after this and it's my favorite Chuck solo - the first pass through is sooooooo great.

My final comment - it is crazy to try to pick a favorite - but this thread and others like it gives me alternate songs to listen to and check out. Fortunately it's not like a lot of threads that are bicker fests -it's just a big list of great solos - from mulitple perspectives.

Underrated

While not the best, Alex Lifeson's solo in the breakdown section of La Villa Strangiato is just awesome. It inspires awe.

Especially this version with a Tele! It sounds so much better than a Strat on this specific song. But after all it's Jeff's tribute to Roy B.

the solo that made me want to play guitar was Page's solo on Whole Lotta Love. Short but just a huge statement of axe wielding

Aqualung - Jethro Tull
Sky High and Angel - Atlanta Rhythm Section - live album "Are You Ready".
Boston Rag, Peg (among others) - Steely Dan

First one at 1:45-2:09 and then from 2:52 on

Not to mention steely Dan's Bodhisatva, which is just incendiary from every angle.
It's kind of a modified bebop rock solo....actually amy have started and ended a whole genre just by playing the solo itself. Never attempted again really, or at least not pulled off with the kind of flat out chops Denny Dias flashed throughout.

Dias' career wasn't long, but sure was meaningful.

Did he play the outtro on My Old School? A lot of greatness on that song too (although my favorite part of that song is the horn riff after California tumbles into the sea)

This is a serious contender in my book: (1:28 for solo)

Simple and to the point. I do love that My Sharona solo too though...

Terry Kath on I'm A Man is worth mentioning. I also especially like the way Blackmore tears it up on Lazy. I wish I could find my Machine Head cd.

Jeff Carlisi on Hold On Loosely hasn't been mentioned (I like lots of the others, too). Melodic, and recalls the melody without being the melody.
