My first Steely Dan CD, Can't Buy a Thrill. I love the world.

Oh yeh.. I can remember one of those times where a song defined the memory..
I was 19..It was a cold, grey, windy, rainy afternoon in '75. the location was in the parking lot at Maroubra beach,Sydney... it was deserted.. I was going surfing?..I was getting into my wetsuit trying to psych myself up.. it was cold... a car pulled up with a few dudes in it.. I could hear the music blaring out of their car through the misty rolled up windows.... it sounded kinda familiar...the lead break was playing.... I went over and tapped on the window, they guy rolled it down,.. hey, guys what's this song?... Steely Dan, Reeling in the Years.... ah yeh.. cool. I'd heard some SD then, not a lot...it wasn't long before everyone had SD records.. a bit slow to catch on here maybe?... it warmed me up...I remember trying to ward off the cold sitting out back singing the song... thinking I'm going to reel in those years ahead and use them to do what I wanted to do.... Go surfing... .. the following year I was on my way to Europe to go surfing. I saw a magazine with pictures of waves in France?... serious Pretzel Logic there, I reckon... edit... I wasn't looking...

Well, saying that the familiar radio staple "Reelin' in the Years" has a "great tele solo" is . . . disinformation. That solo is well known to have been played by Elliot Randall on a Fender Strat, as mentioned above. There was a GP mag feature about the settings etc. used by Elliot on that recording, back in the days. Kudos to anyone who could find that article, scan it & post it!

this version is more like a march and less shuffley...
it is interesting to see Jeff singing too (and standing) since later on, he didn't sing and sat in a chair most of the time... I was trying to think when david palmer left the group... back then they were actually a band! I loved that era..

Here's the June, 2012 Guitarist Magazine interview. There's plenty of documentation about this solo. Elliott spell his name with 2 t's.

Steely Dan are a phenomenal band, everything they've done is awesome.
The Night Fly, Fagen's solo debut, is also pretty awesome - especially I.G.Y! :) |
