Black Magic Woman- Lindsey Buckingham?

Alright, so I know Peter Green gets tons of love around here and pretty much every guitar forum ever, so this may or may not amount to sacrilege, but I was just wondering... does anyone know if Fleetwood Mac ever played Black Magic Woman live with Lindsey Buckingham on lead? Buckingham (who I think is one of the most creative musicians of all time, not to mention a killer singer and player) would have absolutely knocked it out of the park with his fingerstyle playing. I can't find any video anywhere, but I'm not giving up hope quite yet...

Not that I've ever heard of. Oh Well was the blues that the Lindsey version of FM always played.

I had heard that FM did not play it because of it being associated with Santana.

Lindsey is good, but not that good a soloist. That aside, I can't see any reason why he would want to play it either.

2:47- Lindsey rips a furious solo. And that was 3 years ago. For what he played back in the day, check out his leads on- as greggorypeccary mentioned- "Oh Well" on their live album from 1980.

my opinion differs greatly. I have seen Lindsey absolutely rip.. he is a complete guitar player and a terrific soloist...

when I saw this thread, I thought, boy, I'd like to hear him do black magic woman! the band changed so dramatically when Linds and Stevie Nicks joined... I have to imagine it just didn't make sense to do a cover of a cover....

I agree, there's no reason why Lindsey would wanna play it. He's gonna steal the song back from Carlos, and to what end? So Peter gets more respect? Lindsey has been good to FM, but he's not that kind of "team player". He's too creative in his own right to have the time for that.

Anyway, he's an extraordinary guitarist and has done many great solos, IMO. No matter how you define soloist.

How do you come to that conclusion? OK it was written by Greenie but it was the Mac who recorded it initially before Santana ever got his plectrum all over it. So how would it be a cover of a cover???

If the Buckingham/Nicks Mac can play Oh Well, why not Black Magic Woman - or any of the other ones??

Mick Fleetwood's Blues Band has done commendable versions of almost all the old Mac blues songs with Rick Vito playing guitar. What's the difference?

the people who went to fm shows went to hear the rumours type stuff. most of that audience would hear the song as a santana song (note the thread title)

so doing oh well would be an homage and bmw might be confusing.

as for the rest... mick and john probably want to do the old stuff, vito wont care and the audience that goes to see fm without lb and or sn... are probably longer term fans...

The average attendee is not that adroit. If they know "Oh Well", then, we can safely assume they know it is a Mac song of some kind. Otherwise it just some old tune.

The audience DO know "Black Magic Woman" and they think they know who penned it. They think Carlos did, or that he recorded it first. You have no time to disabuse them of this impression, once the song begins to play.

Getbent's way of describing it as a "cover of a cover" just takes time to digest, to think about what that term actually means.

A voice for Fleetwood Mac would have to take valuable time, addressing the audience, and say: "Now we will play an old Fleetwood Mac song, that was recorded years and years blah blah. And we wanna thank Carlos Santana for popularizing this song and he's cool blah blah but he didn't write this song blah blah." And 5% of the audience will hear him and a few others will say to one another "what, did he just thank Santana for popularizing this song?" "yeah" and then Fleetwood Mac would commence to play the "Santana" song. Does not work.

Illustration: I attended a Church concert at Disney in Florida one evening, and the show started fine but Steve and the band were troubled about something. It turned out Grant McLennon (their friend, Go-Betweens) had died and they'd just gotten word and were upset. Steve tried to share his feelings about Grant with the audience of tourists and he asked those in closer, if they knew of Grant and he got stony silence (I was too far back, I couldn't understand quickly enough what was being said) and you guessed it, they were not comforted by this ignorant American audience and we got no encore (they'd been fabulous in New Orleans a couple nights before). The guys at TDPRI are 10 miles ahead of the average audience goer at times.

You're kind of assuming that the 'average joe' actually doesn't care about the origins of a song or the writer.

I'm sure that, if Lindsey Buckingham or any of the others in the band had taken just a couple of minutes (maybe less) to comment on its origins then probably 50% of any audience would have listened to what was being said and maybe even gone and searched out the original version. Most concert goers tend to pick up on what their heroes on stage have to say. They're a totally different audience to those that us ordinary players tend to be playing to who probably don't give two hoots about our opinions or anything else so we may get ignored if we tried to explain the origins of any song.

I saw FM several times during their heyday (the rumors/tusk era) and that crowd came to hear the hits, dance and be entertained...

for me, I love to be educated, but the audiences that I've been around pretty much don't want a bunch of talk from the stage...

but, I like the world the way you describe it way more than the way I perceive it.... !!!

C'mon, "furious"? Even the raised fists from the crowd are a bit half hearted. My fab Lindsey solo is off 'bombs away dream babies'.

Pretty sure that says everything about the audience and nothing about him... still gotta say, I enjoyed that solo- especially that little flourish he hits on at 3:16 and then keeps going with.

I don't think I'm familiar with "Bombs Away Dream Babies"... tried to search for it on Youtube but I could only find other tracks from the album. My favorite Buckingham solo (if you can call it a solo) would have to be his wacky fingerpicking cover of "Here Comes the Sun."

Hello Hello--

Take into consideration that the only reason a band tours is to sell product. They will not take any time to educate their audience about a song [or a "long-gone" member like Peter Green] ] that was not written by a current member of that band. Why promote the sales of a song that doesn't come from the stable of writers that make up the new band?? Of course this is a broad generalization and since Mick Fleetwood is not stupid enough to totally alienate any older fans who are being "converted" to the new stuff they will throw Green a bone [hence the inclusion of "Oh Well" or something like that..]. It's just good business!
