Both vidoes are funny to watch. the one from SCTV stands the test of time. The other one looks re-dickle-less. Back then it was great fun and that's all.

This song was No 1 during the Golden Jubilee of 1977 (though the BBC banned it).

Don't know if it was all just good fun (McClaren excepted).

The message berating feudal monarchy's excess and inequality at a time of mass unemployment was a pretty coherent and sincere one. It was a sign of the times that it was so shocking for many.

Personally I think the music is wonderful

Excellent prog on the subjects

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...Punk_19721976/

it shows the royal lineage from 50s Rock n Roll

i might add i didn't like punk at the time, i thought most of it was crap, yet i appreciate it more now, as someone in the doc said 'it wasn't about the music, it was much better than that'

It was banned....it never was no.1 officially on the BBC charts, made it to no.2....some other limp song was no.1. But everyone knew it was thee song of the time..

It was alot more than just good fun...it was Punk and had massive social and political inplications. It was a lifestyle as meaningful as the 60's hippy movement, so get real

I arrived in London in the middle of May '77... Jubilee time....we stayed 3 days and went to Amsterdam...
it was crazy.. tourists everywhere, accommodation hard to hustle up....

Then came back 6mths later, after driving down to Morocco surfing, to spend the winter/spring 77/78 doing pub work in London...and some shifts at the Mars bar factory in Slough..
I went to a lot of music shows... big and small names,,,punk was in full swing.... weird people on the streets.
I caught the last tube/last bus home most nights... or walked for miles in sleet when the mythical night bus never showed...ha ha ..

good times... no hassles...

there was a punk movie called "Jubilee" I saw at a small art house theatre... I wonder if that's still around?..

Yeah it was real...at least, a lot of it was. I don't know why some people feel the need to put it down and diminish the impact it had.

Apparently Queen and The Sex Pistols (both EMI bands) were recording at Wessex studios at the same time. Here's what happened...

(btw both News of the World and Never Mind the Bollocks are amongst my favourite albums)

Fascinating. It's a fine line between monarchy and anarchy
