Albums that blew you away on first listen

...either the whole thing, a few tracks, or one song

In the 1980s I heard Tracy Chapman's entire cassette self-titled debut and I was at a loss for words. It also touched many others and went really big. I had the same effect from the Juliana Hatfield Three later on, and the brilliant songwriting, but it didn't get recognized nearly as much.

Also in the 1980s when Eddie Van Halen was his own one man category, I went into a music store and the person there introduced me to Joe Satriani's Surfing with the Alien. Though that type of technique is commonplace today, it was very otherworldly at the time and totally surpassed Eddie Van Halen's work.

Stuff that I discovered years later after the debuts that were amazing to me was Beatles Sgt. Pepper and White Album, Joni Mitchell Blue, and Derek and the Dominoes.

At 10 yrs old for me it was Appetite for Destruction by Guns n Roses. Not a bad song on the album in my opinion.

Rush's Moving Pictures. I was 14 and that album floored me. Still does, 32 years later. Directly responsible for me becoming a bassist.

Pink Floyd - Animals
Kate Bush - The Dreaming
XTC - English Settlement
Max Webster - Mutiny Up My Sleeve

All of these blew me away. There were a few more as well... but I don't want to end up with too long of a list.

+1 for Allman Brothers at the Fillmore. The first time I heard those slide licks on Statesboro Blues I didn't know what to do with myself.

Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced (because it was so revolutionary in every way).

But I'm not actually that easily blown away ...
