Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band... there are quite a few... but that one still blows me away today.
also: Miles Davis - Kind of Blue... same thing. Blows me away today. |

This one, courtesy of my high school physics teacher when I was 16:
![]() I wore out his copy and so had to buy 2! Still knocks me out to hear. That's a whole lotta sound for one acoustic guitar.

I'm wracking my brain, but I can't think of an album that blew me away on first listen. Maybe Boston's first album back in the '70s. But I can definitely remember being blown away by hearing the harmonies on "Sounds of Silence" the first time I played "The Graduate" soundtrack on my stereo.

Drive by Truckers - Southern Rock Opera. I had not heard too many of there songs but figured I would buy the album and see what they were like. It still blows me away every time I listen too it.

Born To Run. The whole wall of sound type thing going on, especially all the reverb on his guitar on some tracks, like Backstreets and Jungleland, is just so amazing, haunting almost. I get goosebumps every time I listen to it.

I remember being at the record store and the salesman said "Some people think this is the best live album of all time. It's really the best album ever." He was right. The oft mentioned

Easier to list songs that blew me away, because I didn't start buying albums (on any media) until my 20's. Also, some that might have blown me away maybe didn't because I'd heard bits and pieces of them here and there prior to hearing the albums. Anyway...
Gary Moore - After the War. (Then I come here and find out that that 'Messiah' tune is a cover...) Dave Brubeck - Take Five. Yes, it's a kind of novelty, but still kills. Stray Cats - Built for Speed. The first I'd heard of any new rockabilly, even though I'd liked the old rockabilly that wasn't being played any more. And again, finding to my chagrin that some of the tunes were covers. Jon and the Nightriders - Fiberglass Rocket. Similar to the above, but with surf music. Depth Charge knocked my socks off. Fernando Germani - Uh, don't know the title. See, I started with keyboards, and this guy blew E. Power Biggs out of the water. And the stuff was recorded in the 30's. Rafael Mendez - Magnificent Mendez. The best trumpet player, ever, anywhere. I listened to this a hundred times. Flock Of Seagulls - Flock of Seagulls. You mean I can do that with the stuff I already own? Cool... Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen - Live from the Armadillo World Arena. Well, I got at least one telecaster on the list, I guess... |

I was about 12 or 13 when I really got into Van Halen. I was collecting all their tapes. This was a time before internet. You could not watch videos on You Tube. I just knew I liked every VH song on all the tapes I had so far. I got to a point where I had all their albums except the elusive Fair Warning. For some reason I though it was their first, and least popular album. I was corrected by a friend. I saved up my paper route money and took a bus to town to get it. For some reason I never knew anyone, who had the Fair Warning album. I don't think there was any radio hits from that one around my parts. The cover was just weird. I got it home and put it in my Ghetto Blaster. First song was....Mean Streets intro. I was friggin blown away. I still remember hearing it for the first time. The album was released in 1981. First time I ever heard any of it was about 1985 when I finally bought it.
