Rory Gallagher recordings found
In case there are any Rory fans here who might be interested, noticed this story and thought I'd share.
Nice when stuff like this happens. Makes me wonder what else is out there in closets and attics. (I'm going to Cork this morning, incidentally...) |

Yes!Rory was great! The British guitarists had more or less the same influences.Rory also had those but he also had something else that they hadn´t.His tone was unique.Somewhere between clean and dirty, very hard to nail. His choice of notes was also very personal.I had the luck to see him three times in Stockholm. He did not get the recognition he deserved partly because there were so many "Guitar Heroes"around. In ´72 though,he was voted "world´s best guitarist" in Melody Maker and his future looked bright.

I saw him open for Deep Purple in 1973 or 74.He had a bunch of different brand small amps on stage. Very different from other guitarists used for large arena shows.

Great story. I always credit Rory as an early infuence, nobody else in my little Pennsylvania town knew who he was so I came out sounding a bit different from the other guitarists around here after listening to him. Of course they all liked him too as soon as they heard Laundromat, etc. Thanx for posting that.

Remember discovering Rory in the early 70's thru an interview in a VERY early issue of Guitar Player, which at the time was such a cool magazine. Said something about a Fender being able to hit the back wall. Really liked his honest approach and take on the blues, especially the Against The Grain LP. One of the best at pinched harmonics. The Irish Show Band scene must have given him plenty of solid training.

A lad that I went to school with was chosen by Rory to win a Strat in a guitarist competition ran by one of the guitar magazines. The guy who won the guitar for his playing abilities was a teenager at the time, he later went on to play with Rory and after Rory's death played with Rory's brother at the tribute concerts.
