Any Fans Of David Bromberg?
One of my favorites since back in the early 70s when I first found out about him. And all of a sudden he just up & quit playing for about 22 years.
Just as suddenly, a few years ago he popped up again. I stumbled on a show called Danny's Guitar Shop last week & checked it out & decided it was worthwhile. But knowing me & how I forget stuff I set up the DVR to record it which turned out to be a good idea. This morning I checked the DVR to see if I had anything worthwhile on there & I saw Danny's Guitar Shop. But it didn't say who was on. I decided to check it out & it was David Bromberg. The whole show is on here: http://thekey.xpn.org/2011/09/video-...avid-bromberg/

I have tickets to see him at the Sellersville Theater in Pennsylvania on June 9. Front row, center.
He quit playing years ago to go to violin making school. After that, he opened a vintage violin shop in Wilmington, Delaware and is now one of the top authorities on American made violins. For years, his only playing was a weekly jam session at a bar in Wilmington. Then he started going back on the road again. The violin shop is still in operation and he still lives in Wilmington. Love the Bromberg!
I worked his show at the Rhythm and Roots Festival here in RI a few years ago. I actually got a little misty seeing him play. It was like seeing an old friend. I saw him quite a lot in the 70s. He was just a little rusty compared to the old days, but it was a wonderful show. He was very nice to work with (for) also.

I've seen him a couple of times at the Wednesday night blues jam at the Queen Theater in Wilmington. It's right across the street from his shop. I don't know if he's there every Wednesday or not, but it wouldn't surprise me if he was.

In 1995, he came out of hiding for the first time in years and did the whole big band thing for the last time AFAIK for his 50th Birthday Party, with 2 shows, one in NYC and one at the State Theater in Portland, ME. They actually moved in to the State a few days ahead of time and rehearsed intensely. Absolutely one of the best shows I've ever seen the equal of his shows from the seventies. I think the ceiling came down during "Sharon". I saw him again with a bluegrass quintet in an intimate opera house in Camden, Maine several years ago, and that was excellent as well.

I had to laugh when he said he's a much better singer now than he used to be.
I aint buyin' it. He still sounds the same to me. But I never had a problem with his singing in the first place. And I think his playing may be the biggest influence on my own. It's great to know that he's so close to where I live. I might take the drive down to Wilmington sometime soon & check out the shop & try to meet him after all these years.

I was in college in the late 70s and to us then Bromberg was a big deal. He was peaking when he came to my school (Kenyon in Ohio) and I saw him there. Nice concert but not exactly life-changing. It was shortly thereafter he dropped off the radar; didn't know he became an instrument maker, but I say more power to him. Pretty cool.

Check out the video clip on the link, if you didn't already. It's pretty interesting stuff. He talks about how he was completely burnt out & had lost all desire to perform at that time.

Saw him in 1973 performing with some other notables. (Dirt Band, Byrds, Doc Watson, Earl Skruggs, Joan Baez) Have not followed him but like his music. He looks like he is having fun in the video. Good for David.

I saw him in the mid '70's at a college gym with his big band. He made everyone in that place feel like they were seeing an old friend in an intimate setting. Great show and one I'll never forget.

Definitely a fan of Mr. Bromberg!
(Hard to hear his version of Mr. Bojangles and then not miss that lead when someone else does theirs....) He can play guitars and mandolin, fiddle & dobro.... and he plays with the ability to replicate the standards, but with the imagination to ADD something to the music. He can make you laugh and make you cry. How Late'll ya play til indeed. He's amazing. |
