When Dick Dale's signature tune is covered by Vince Guaraldi

"Misirlou" has been described as the surf tune that gives the listener the feeling on what riding waves is like.

But Vince Turns the whole feel into something of what a cruise along the riviera in a yacht must be like.

now that's just cool. gotta love Vince. he's a lot more than the "Charlie Brown" guy (but that alone is worth celebrating)

Big Vince fans in this house. His other combo work is outstanding (like his glasses).

And look at all that vintage Fender gear on one stage...

'Misirlou,' from Klezmer to Surf Guitar

'Misirlou,' from Klezmer to Surf Guitar

January 8, 2006 - The tune "Misirlou" has traveled quite a path, from klezmer music to 1950s exotica acts and finally to surf guitar and an appearance in the 1994 film Pulp Fiction.

Many of you heard it again in a Jan. 1 feature by Jon Kalish on Lionel Ziprin's efforts to preserve the recordings of his grandfather, Rabbi Nuftali Zvi Margolies Abulafia.

Surf guitar legend Dick Dale & His Del-Tones turned the melody into a sizzling electric riff in the early 1960s. His grandparents were born in Lebanon, and as a child he remembers hearing his relatives play "Misirlou," which translates as "The Egyptian," on the Middle Eastern lute called the oud.

Yale Strom, adjunct professor of enthnography at New York University, helps trace the history of a hardy melody all the way back to its Greek and Turkish roots.

Vince really nails it.

I love Martin Denny's take on Misirlou, too. Makes me feel like I'm sitting in a clay-walled bar with beaded curtains in some far-off bazaar.

Yeah I know where it came from but it's still Dale's signature tune.

Man, Vince was sooo good...

And of course, as others have mentioned, the tunes roots have nothing to do with catching a wave...

Funny what ends up translating into a great surf tune, ain't it?

Funny this thread came up. I am totally digging the Space Ostrich tune in Rocksmith.
It has to be at least based off of Misirlou.

Just a style that I have never played. Rocksmith has me trying a lot of new stuff.

Cool stuff. If you come across it, listen to Cal Tjader Live at the Blackhawk. It's got Vince playing, essentially, salsa-style piano with some heavy hitters like Mongo Santamaria and Willie Bobo. They do a Night in Tunisia that is amazing.
