Just got my copy of the new Van Halen album and WOW!!!

Loving this new record!! It's definitely got that vintage VH vibe going on and it also has some newer school sounds. Some of which are monster tones. This will def be in the player for awhile. I just ordered my tickets for the concert too! W00t!

I'm so stoked!

I'm really enjoying it, too. I think it's the heaviest album they've ever made. And it's nice to have some interesting lyrics with unique style and wit, instead of ol' half-wit. (I really enjoyed Sammy's autobio, but his lyrics... no.)

I think it's killer, and will stay in the car for awhile. It seems to me Tattoo is probably the weakest song - odd choice for the first single and track. Although it seems like a double album for VH - their (DLR) albums are normally like 30 minutes long!

So there is hope? I was really let down when I heard Tattoo. Well, it looks like tomorrow will be NCDD! You guys talked me into it.

It's got the most direct, catchy chorus and conventional song structure and listeners can relate to the lyric. So I'd say, to the contrary, it's the most obvious choice for a single.

It's pretty awful from start to finish. IMHO -YMMV and all that internet stuff.

The solo on Big River is my favorite so far. It's so VH classic.

I guess, but old school VH is always about "weird" to me - their best stuff, at least. What do you think of Tattoo compared with the rest of the album?

I wasn't really feeling it from the song previews, but once I got the CD on Saturday, I haven't been able to stop listening to this. It's 1978, 1986, 1998, and 2012 all at the same time.

Tattoo is the most pop radio friendly song on the album. The rest is decidedly heavier, more interesting, and a huge kick in the pants. It's made me pick up my guitars more than usual - if I'm not listening, I'm playing! Anything that inspires me to do that is a good thing.

I really like "Tattoo." It is more accessible than the rest of the album, which I really like, but I think it would've been even better with just a touch more of the pop aesthetic of "Tattoo." But I'm still in settling in with the album, so my feelings could change.

They cover the "Big River"? JC's?
Impressive.

It's not a cover to my knowledge.

Big River is a re-worked VH tune that was called Big Trouble on their initial demos in the 70s.

Heavy? Like Mean Streets heavy?

I have not liked what I have heard of this new album yet, but if it compares to the heaviness of Mean Streets, it may be worth a purchase.

Musically, it's heavier than "Mean Street." The lyrics aren't as let's-act-tough juvenile, but they're more witty and interesting.

If you dig VH tunes like Atomic Punk, On Fire, You're No Good, Loss of Control, House of Pain, or even some of the heavier Hagar stuff like Get Up, Don't Tell Me, and Humans Being, then the new album should go down pretty smooth for you. It is both heavier and darker than those tracks, but at the same time, they wouldn't feel out of place on a set list with the new stuff.

I just found out that friends of mine are seeing them tonight at the Forum in L.A. at what I assume to be a surprise semi-private warm-up show.
