Clapton & Beck

In this clip from the '80s check out Beck's solo about 2:20 in. What does that tele sound remind you of?

No idea of tele sound, but the solo reminds me Chuck Berry.

Sounds like Jeff-especially his stuff with Jan Hammer.

That's my favorite song from that album. Jeff must have eaten his Wheaties that morning....takes no prisoners.

It reminds me that as far as playing blues is concerned - Simon Phillips is a great fusion drummer.

Truly wretched.

Clapton loves every second of Beck. He's Beck's biggest fan.

Clapton would have done himself a favor by getting out of that "2" position on his guitar and maybe stepping on a clean boost when he soloed.

But that was his whole bag back then - the whole "amp on 3" thing.

Beats the hell out of the tone he's had for the last 25 years though...

I thought it sounded just like the Stairway to Heaven Solo at the end. Beck's Tele just cuts right through after Clapton's strat.

Both Jeff's tone and his playing completely smoke Eric's

Personally I don't hear anything wrong with EC's tone on this. He was one of the first players to use that position 2 tone and make it a signature tone of his. And even if he was a bit the worse for too much of the hard stuff at the time, his playing is still as fluid as it ever was.

I don't hear either Beck or Clapton being better than the other - just different styles and techniques to deliver different tones.

The day Beck can step up to the mic and offer the huge package that Clapton offers I'll be very interested indeed. People who think it's a competition are missing the point. They both seemed very happy playing together to me.

The first 12 bars of Beck's solo remind me of early Clapton.

I suppose I should have continued on with my comment of earlier....

Just to qualify/clarify:

It's a totally subjective opinion that in this particular clip of Jeff and Eric, I think Jeff sounded and played better than Eric....that is totally a personal opinion. Although, on any other given night the opposite could very well be true. I saw them on tour here last summer and they both traded off all night long. They're both fantastic and I could not possibly have any higher of respect than for these guys.

My apologies for upsetting the Eric lovers.

I love them both, but I would give the nod to EC for both tone and playing on this particular one. I like that quacky strat tone that Clapton has, and don't care much for Beck's tone in this one. He's playing a tele but it doesn't sound that tele-ish. I also like Clapton's solo a bit better. I love Jeff Beck, but I tend to like him more when he has really strong melody to work off of. Cause We've Ended As Lovers type things. When he's just "going off" it can get a little wankery for my taste.
