The big reggae thread
Well it shouldn't be a surprise that I'm a big reggae fan and I know that the music has more fans on this board so here's the thread in which we can express our love for the music.
First up, here's the raw sounding original of Peter Tosh' "Walk and don't look back" And for good measure, here's the later version with Mick Jagger guesting. When I was in college my record collection seemed to grow by the day and I discovered ASWAD who still are one of my all time favorite Reggae bands Can't have a thread like this without THIS. UB40 I saw them two years ago with their new singer, they were fantastic. Here they are in 1981 showing what a powerhouse band they were even back then. And to show that even current reggae has a place here...

This is a pleasant sight to see. I basically grew up on reggae and was my main band 'Zionites' for 12 years and majority of my gigging career. Al Anderson and Earl "China" Smith are 2 of my favorite players. Al's playing flows just like water.
Also when it comes to more of the island jazz influence Earnest Ranglin is just incredible. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0EOHS-9tOk |

Great thread and ne4tt you have awesome taste! I prefer the older stuff. Here's my contribution: in the early 70s Serge Gainsbourg went to Jamaica with bags of money and recorded with Sly and Robbie among other things a reggae version of the Marseillaise (French national anthem)
The dub versions of the songs from that album are great: Another non Jamaican reggae artist that I like is African singer Alpha Blondy: |
