Midrange Poll
Just wondering who prefers a pup with pronounced mids, and reduce at the amp or a pup with less mids and add at the amp. I've tried both ways and am still undecided as to which way is best.

I often like pickups with a lot of mids, and amp with mids pumped, and speakers with a pronounced midrange.
It can sound big and fat, so sometimes it is too much... I suffered from a two-guitarist arms race :) Some folks dislike my affinity for mids, some like it... I like mainly it for live stuff.

Unless you have an amp with an active EQ, you can't add at the amp. With most amps you can only cut. So, if you've got every EQ knob on 5 you're cutting everything. If you've got everything on 5 except you have the mids up, you're just cutting the mids less.
I set my amps so the EQ is "flat" (relative term for a guitar amp) and use the tone knob on the guitar. |
