Which 'bucker?

Hello all.

I'm about to change out the p'ups on my Squier Telecustom and as always doing it on the cheap

Looking at GFS 'Vinatge Splits' or 'GFS Vintage 59s' (unless something better comes along).

There isn't any soundbytes on the GFS site so ...
Has anyone had any experience with either of these? (or both)

I have no idea how either would sound and am open to anything i guess.

Any thoughts (or other p'up alternatives) greatly appreciated. Cost is the main criteria. Can't justify hundreds on a pickup...

Check out Toneriders. Gret sounding and feeling pickups at a great price. Rocksong or A4 in the neck would do the trick quite nicely and stay well within your budget.

I'll second the Tonerider suggestion, I just put a Rocksong neck p/u in the bridge of my 51 and I really like the tone. The bridge humbucker sounded pretty good too, it was just a little hotter than I was looking for.

I have a clip here that has a 2005 Mim Ash tele bridge pickup in the right channel and an Agile LP copy with GFS Vintage '59's as the lead in the left channel. The crunchy rhythm is the GFS '59 neck pickup. The playing is not devoid of mistakes, and I hesitate to post this in this august company, but it will probably give you some idea of what the GFS '59's sound like. Everything was recorded direct, but there are some amp sims and VST effects involved, mostly light reverb and light compression.

I have Vintage Splits in my Squier Tele Custom, and I love them. In the bridge you have a really articulate, chimey high end. Check out the song "Do Miss America" by Ryan Adams. Bascially, with the bridge pickup that is what you get.

I'm a little less happy with the rhythm pickup. It can be a bit dark and muddy, but you can also get some nice Keith Richardsesque sounds out of it.

Sorry, you are talking bout a Tele, the Rocksongs are Strat P/us, however, there is a good a-b comparison on this forum between the Bill Lawrence Keystones and the Tonerider Tele pickup. Arlo, I think posted it. Just do a search. As has been said, the GFS are great sounding also.
