That tune is on "Looking Back" also, which is a phenomenal album featuring Clapton, Green, Flint and others.

I used to only have 1 guitar- a '70 Goldtop Deluxe. I loved it dearly. I went hardcore into bluegrass mandolin and sold my L.P. and my '57 Vibrolux to finance a Summit mando.
Now I'm mostly half and half with bluegrass/electric music and am kicking myself. But- for what I do now, my tele and Reverend Buckshot couldn't be better.

P-90: Ultimate choice for RAUNCH!

Howdy,

If one were recording a track for a Hollywood movie where, say..a young Halle Berry were to saunter across the room wearing a short skirt and black fishnet stockings..a P-90 equipped guitar would have to be used!
No P/U captures "nasty" like the P-90. While P-90's aren't quite as versatile as Leo Fender's single coils, they're no "one trick Pony" either. Think of songs like "Johnny B. Goode" (original version), "Get Off my Cloud" and of course "Fire Down Below" and you get the sonic picture.

PS: My Gibson LP Special has a pair of SD Vintage P-90's. Love 'em.

My $99.00 SX all Mahogany LPJ!!
I installed Kent Armstrong P-90’s Grover tuners and TonePro’s bridge and tailpiece, and a bone nut!
It has become one of my favorite guitars with a little drive I can get that Fillmore Allman brothers tone darn close in the bridge position, the neck pickup is a little dark good for Jazzing it up, but this guitar has a big chunky neck and jumbo fret wire and is a breeze to play.

Still love my Tele!

I have a pair of Vintage Vibe HCC P-90s in my project Tele. The sound is fat and the pickups are very responsive to picking changes. I have two complaints: (1) there is a slight 60 cycle hum like any vintage single coil, and (2) even with the neck pickup at its lowest height, the neck pickup still over powers the bridge pickup somewhat.

I'm a little surprised that no one has mentioned one of these. I just picked up an Aerodyne Tele last week. I have sc's and hb's, but the p-90 in the neck really does something for me. And the middle switch position tone (p-90 and tele bridge) rules.

Background, Gibson ES330 - It's not a Casino, but it's close to it, so I totally understand what you mean about the versatility of this pickup - especially in a hollowbody. Perfectly captures the resonance and sustain of a Gibson, but with the tonal range you'd expect from a Gretsch or a Guild.

Foreground, LP Jr. "Melody Maker" - A P90 on a plank guitar is a whole different experience. This sounds like an Esquire that got dirty. Roll the tone pot about halfway and it has a wonderful gritty rhythm sound. (Picture is old - I've since replaced the stock tunomatic saddles with roller saddles.

For a recent wedding gig I limited myself to two guitars: my Gretsch baritone for deep twang and the occasional bassline and my Casino for everything else. While I play with squeaky clean tone 99.999999...% of the time I know that the P90s can push the little Vox amp into the exact taste-serving of overdrive. In sparser arrangements the Casino can really fill out a song without dominating it. I roll the tone of both pups to about 3.5 and get creaminess on the bridge and a nice rich boom on the neck.

When I go back to my Tele (CIJ 52 style with OV pickups) after playing the Casino, I remember why I like the having the difference ;)

I've got Lollars in mine. I live in an 80-year-old farmhouse with antique wiring and the pickups remain very quiet.

This is actually my '52ri that I've reworked over the past 7 years.

New to the P-90 club here!

just bought the PRS SE Soapbar II a month ago, and I'm loving the sound of the stock P-90's- I see no need to change them at this time- though i may pop in a rotary switch.

When I was searching for a P-90 guitar i was surprised at how unpopular P-90's actually were (the people at a local guitar store didn't even know what a P-90 was. "wait, so it's the single coil that's big like a humbucker? I don't think we have anything like that here").

I started my search looking for a TC-90, which seems to not exist- Sam Ash never heard of it, and after finally getting somebody with half a brain on the line at guitar center, they looked up the model number to find out there was only one in stock in the country (in FL), and none on order- so I moved on.

Finally settled down with a PRS SE Soapbar (the non-flame top version- the flame top version has a opaque black finish around the sides and back- god knows what the actual body wood looked like under there) from Mandolin Brothers, and I'm quite happy with it, simple, utilitarian plank of wood that just so happens to sound amazing, the wraparound bridge intonates fine, even with a wound G, i looked into an adjustable version before I bought it, but it really doesn't need it, and at $110, i think I'll keep it as is for the meantime.

they just discontinued the model (no clue why), so get them while they're hot.

I also love my Casino with stock pups. I have it set up for slide (high action and 13-52s) and play it straight into a Marshall DSL 100 with quite a bit of gain. It can make sounds from lush blooms on chords with gentle picking to screaming demon on single note or two note runs picked hard. I play this and my new FSR HWY1 tele with nocaster pups at gigs - they both just plug in with no effects.

I l-o-v-e this setup. I'll try to post a sample soon - we have a gig tomorrow night which I may be able to record some of.

Stock P90s in a '94 historic model '56 LP Goldtop. Great sounding.
I did have to adjust lower neck pickup and raise bridge to get
a good balance but it also improved the sound of each one individually.

Anybody tried the Rio Grande Dirty Harry yet? I used a neck position in a build a few months ago and it was out of site. It fits a tele neck rout and even has adjustable pole pieces. I'm dying to use the bridge pickup sometime.

Geez guys, beautiful axes.

I get by with this plain-looking brute - Warmoth strat with VV hb-sized P90s. It's got an alnico pole neck pickup with a normal bar-magnet job in the bridge. It pretty much covers anything I throw at it. For me, the long scale, swamp ash body, and bolt-on maple neck combined with P90s is perfect.

I've got Lollar p-90's in my 54 Historic Les Paul. I've been happiest with those. I also liked the stock Gibson p-90's that came with the guitar, but they had a bit more raw vibe and broke up a bit earlier than I wanted. They'd be perfect for certain things though, but the Lollars are more versatile. I have also tried Harmonic Design VP-90's and Duncan P-90's. I think I like the Lollars the best because they have a nice open, clear sound for clean stuff - no midrange honk or boxiness and they are very useable no matter where you set the volume knob (I also did the treble bleed mod on my guitar).

My first guitar, a non-reverse Firebird (FB-1) had two P90's, and that was the beginning of my love affair with that pickup.

I had an SG Jr with a HUGE neck and a dog-ear P90.

I traded BOTH of these PLUS CASH for a prototype Les Paul Pro...sounds crazy, but at the time, I dug the P90's with ebony fretboard.

I still have the LP Pro.

I have a Hamer Monaco III with the standard Seymour Duncan P90's. I've considered changing to Lollars, but haven't done it yet.

I play just about everything but bluegrass on these guitars.

I've got one on order and UPS should deliver it tomorrow. I'll post a a review of it after I install it in an Ash SX along with a neck pickup from Benbo, expect it this weekend.

I just put a set of pete billtof's vintage vibe p90's in my goldtop and Iam a very happy camper. Currently with the alnco magnets however being curious by nature, ( I know it killed the cat), I will probably try the ceramic magnets; at least in the bridge position although it's hard to imaigine better tone than I have now. What an amazing improvement over the dimarzio tone zone buckers that were in there! These pickups have soul and clarity; heart is the best word I can come up with. Thin can make you grin but FAT is where it's at. Think Luther Allison. Bil
