Neck p/u Cover Mod....Pics!!!!
I got this idea a couple of days ago from a thread on 'Just Pickups'. It had a link to a previous thread where Ole Fuzzy had a pic of a modified neck p/u cover. I thought it looked cool and figured I'd give it a whirl.
Then the following day someone had a link to a new SD pickup with the same cover mod. Then I knew I had to do it. I used the cover that came off the junky Duncan Designed p/u in my Squire VM Thinline. I initially drilled some holes in the top of the cover then used a metal cutting wheel on my Dremel tool. It worked beautifully and cut a nice straight line. I used a flat and a round file to fix up a few things and finished off with 400 grit paper to smooth the final cut edge. It fit perfectly on my GFS Fatbody p/u and I think it looks pretty cool.

It hasn't changed the sound, as far as I can tell, because the Fatbody's don't come with a cover anyway.
And I did remember to ground the cover as well.

I'm guessing there was maybe a total of 1 - 1 1/2 hrs of work at the most.

Nice work. That has to be the BEST looking option to a stock Tele neck pickup that I've yet to see.
It also has a very GFS-ish flavor to it - I can't believe they didn't think of it first. I'm glad you beat them to the punch! Can I get a set of Strat pickups done like that? Besides looking cool, I'm sure that it provides extra protection to the coil windings - something that plastic or cloth never will.

Yeah it does have an unusual GFS look to it, I agree. It does provide protection of the windings and I think it sort of cleans up the look a bit compared to the uncovered pickup. Thanks to everyone for the nice compliments. It's a real simple and cheap project to do.

For pu's that come with covers it will brighten them up somewhat to remove the cover or the part of the cover over the poles. And for many Tele owners that's a desirable outcome.

I can shoulder that responsibilty. Hey I'm just happy it turned out as good as it did. I'd like to see pics of other people's results as well.

Thank God
I really hope Seymour got a patent on it. I don't think I could sit by and watch GFS take another idea from someone else. Most of the stuff they have they got from another's hard work and original idea, I'm really surprised Gretsch didn't find them and sue their pants off. Gretsch is known for vigorously protecting their patent rights. GFS has gotten away with way too much in the past and they really need to either come up with something of their own design or stop riding the backs of others who worked their buts off to create something.
OK my rant is now over. Thank you and I'll now return you to the previously running thread.

For god's sake Seymour Duncan has built an empire on making Tele, Strat and PAF replacement pickups for the last 30yrs. Where's the originality in that. GFS is doing absolutely nothing different then every other manufacurer out there it seems to me!!!!

Boneyguy, you've done some real nice work there on that pup, nice workmanship.
The pickguard design has always been a favorite of mine, all four my new bodies get that shape pickguard, anytime the drill holes ain't already in the wrong places. But I respectfully disagree with your take on Mr. Duncan: 'For god's sake Seymour Duncan has built an empire on making Tele, Strat and PAF replacement pickups for the last 30yrs. Where's the originality in that.' Many folks got rich off the creativity of 'guitar repairmen' like Seymour Duncan; its about time one such guy made good. Again, kudos to you and your fine work.
