OK, I bit...(Don Mare content)
Just ordered a set of Don Mare's, Rick Holmstrom pu's for my future USACG Tele. I also ordered a new Louis Electric KR-12 amp (check out my post on the Amps forum) to play it through. It was only 2 weeks ago I picked up an Epiphone '56 Les Paul Goldtop and installed all new electronics and Lollar pu's on it. I've been on an equipment buying jag since picking up my guitars after a 2-3 yr hiatus. I'm not sure I can explain the break from playing as I've never had a "self imposed" break for that long before. Sorta' hard for me to believe it myself.
I had just sat in with my buddy Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets at Blues On Grand in Des Moines a couple of years ago, and then with another group of friends, Sally Weisenburg and The Famous Sidemen (the great Don Berbaum on guitar). After that I laid my guitars down and didn't even look at them for a couple of years. And I played daily before that, just like many players on this forum. I guess I just got sorta' burned out and sorta' distracted (I also like street rods and Harleys). But, anyway, I'm baaaaack...and freshly in debt...again. Tom

Welcome back to the guitar world. You got to jam with Beavis. Well, I could be wrong but I heard Anson was the inspiration for Beavis. Didn't Mike Judge play bass in the Rockets?
I have too much time on my hands. Dan

I did too.
Spoke to him on Saturday night for long while, and ended up ordering a set of his 4709s. He played several teles to give me an idea of the pickup differences and I was really surprised how good it sounded over the phone, not to mention he's a killer player and great guy...very passionate about tone and was great to talk to. Can't wait for them to get here. |

Dons pup for Steel sound
I emailed Don for advice on my quest for a steel sound from my Tele.
He reckons his "Mesh and Ripple"...7.3k staggered bridge pup is the go for what I want. Has anyone had dealings with this one or is it a newie for my benefit? I'm hearing so much positive feedback from all of you about his work, I might just bite the bullet.

I thought that whole thing worked out...maybe I'm misremembering, all I know is I wasn't so offended that I wouldn't give the guy another chance.
Talking to him on the phone is a lot different than whatever he was posting here a few years ago. I'm glad to have these pickups coming my way. |

I bought a 5549 (7.2k) bridge for my MIM Esquire. There's something quite awesome about having a pickup wound for you by a real guy. I'm still getting used to the higher output and the difference in sound with the backplate (which is much different than I would have imagined). It definitely allows me to get some twang while still being a very forward, rockin' sort of sound.
Again, I can't stress enough how much it means to me to be able to email or call some dude and for not much more than a Duncan pickup he makes you one to meet your needs.

It's too bad he can't contribute here, but he does have a forum of his own I believe. Regardless, he may very well be the best winder around at the moment.
