Tele copy pickup swap

Hi all.
I just recently picked up a Cruiser by Crafter telecaster copy.
It was a present from my wife actually.
It has string thru basswood body,3 saddle bridge, rosewood fret board and has the usual 3 way switch with 1 vol. 1 tone.
It plays fine and looks o.k. but the tone isn't what I was hoping for.
Does anyone have any ideas on what replacement pickups I could slap into it?
I'm a classic rock player mostly, but what I'm looking for
is the "Luther Perkins" kind of tone.
What pickup if any would put out that kind of tone in this beast?
The price obviously would be a consideration since I wouldn't want to put $200 worth of pickups into a $150 guitar.
Thanks for any suggestions.
Eric

For bang for buck can't beat GFS, The Lindy Fralin Telecaster pup would be a good choice if you wanted to drop $ 80 into it.
