GFS Lil Puncher - Wicked Solution For String Imbalance
Ok, I bought a set of GFS lil Punchers a few months ago and have liked what they do but really not like what they don't do. As there are a few of us here at the forum that have experienced a drop in volume on the outer e strings this work-around may prove useful for you.
After following Jay's directions to get the pups up and running I was still not fully impressed. However, I had an idea today to file down the sides of the bridge saddles to make the overall diameter narrower. End result, I now have a GFS Lil Puncher bridge pickup that has no volume drop on the outer e strings. Voila! There you have it! This pup now rocks! Now that I have gotten this far with it I think it is time for some 500k pots to get the best tone out of it. Cheers lads! I hope that this somehow proves useful! EDIT!!! Guitar Fetish have just released a new Lil Puncher Model the "Lil Puncher XL" designed to fit US made Teles with string spacing wider than 2 1/16. If you liked the Lil Punchers before this may be just what you were looking for... maybe just what I was looking for.

Bob, I am sure you are a nice fellow and have good intentions. But, this seems like a pretty extreme fix. |

I was real hesitant on getting the Lil punchers because of the exact problem you describe, Bob. But now that they have the XLs I may just bite. As with all things GFS The price is always right.
Did you file the saddle flat or try to keep it round? |

It's a wicked solution for a reason!
Well, it is a bit of a radical surgery just to get a pickup to fit properly, but it is not a Fender guitar and the saddles are not anything special. As per the filing, I only filed the sides of the saddle to reduce the width and didn't alter the shape of the saddle at all.
I have also done a few other mods to this guitar, for example, chiseling out the neck rout to fit a strat pickup. So, now I have the GFS Lil Puncher in the bridge position and a Dimarzio VV Heavy Blus in the neck. These two together seem to make a pretty good combination. The bottom line for me was making a guitar that I had stopped playing into something that I want to play again. I now have two different flavors of Tele to choose from. Because this Tele is not a Fender and was not expensive I feel comfortable doing these kind of mods. I wouldn't do this to my Highway One. Actually, I just put in a Seymour Duncan 5/2 (bridge) and Dimarzio Twang King (neck) into it. No extra mods needed. If I find I have fallen in love with the Lil Puncher, I may just buck-up and buy the new XL set. Cheers! Bob |
