SD Jazz in Tele?
Anyone using a Duncan Jazz in the neck of their tele? How do you like it? Split sounds? With Bridge?
It is supposed to be decent clean, be a bit mroe single coil like (from descriptions). Players? Dale |

SD Jazz
I have one in my LP Classic. I think it would be good in the tele neck. I have never heard a split HBer that I liked. The Jazz is one of the cleaner neck HBers, but it can rock too. I like the Seth Lover too.

I was considering a Seth Lover but the 4 conductor version would take 4-8 weeks and would be $40 to $50 more.
The Jazz is pretty articulate? I am planning to put it into my US Fat Tele as the DH-1 died and you can't get them anymore. Dale |

![]() Ignore that high society tart on the left.... The one on the right has a jazz in the neck position and I'm liking it very much; it probably works better with a louder bridge pup than the wimpy one I have back there but it's a keeper for me...

The Seth is about $15 more than the Jazz, then it is $10 more for the 4 conductor. In this case I would have had to pay shipping $12 for the SL where I don't for the Jazz.
I still may have done it if SD handn't said it was a 4 to 8 week wait. |

A Jazz and Quarter Pounder make a good match - a 59 may be too woolly, overshadow the bridge PU.
Another fav is a miniHB and a stock style bridge PU - I really like the Alnico Pro II and the JD. I like balanced combinations I guess...

I've got a parts Tele that I put together with leftover parts I'd had laying around. I had a SD Jazz (chrome cover) and an SD 1/4lbser so I used those.
While the Jazz has 4 conductor wiring, I wired it standard. The 1/4lbser matches with the output of the Jazz nicely and the Jazz doesn't get too muddy. The guitar has a descent sound, but not great. I use it primarily for a backup/guest guitar and for slide sometimes. If I were to complain about the pickups, it would be that they didn't have a lot of "life" or "character". The 1/4lbser is not for those seeking twang and is a little too aggressive/muddy for my tastes to use all the time, though it does have it's place. Another humbucker I've had in the neck of my Tele that worked really well, was an old Dimarzio Super II with the black plastic cover and 12 adjustable pole pieces. These pickups were (are?) voiced brighter than standard pickups and do not have the typical midrange spike and over wound mud that most Dimarizo humbuckers I've used have had. I currently have this pickup in an old ash-bodied Ibanez Blazer in the neck position and it sounds great. YMMV.

I have 3 guitars with SD Alnico Pro II's in the neck. I like those a great deal as well. I was thinking of something that was a bit different from my usual and that is similar in ways the DH-1 (which died). I had to order a new pickguard as well as fender had the 2 screw holes on one side of the DH-1.

SD Jazz
I had a Warmoth parts Tele and I put an SD Jazz in the neck position. I loved it, and I think it sounds nicer than most hummers when split. The Seth Lover is another good one as well, but personally the combo I had (SD Jazz neck, Fralin stock bridge) was my favorite and I went through a lot of expensive alternatives. I also had an SD Broadcaster in the bridge of that guitar for a while, it worked really well also
FWIW..... |

Dale, are your Alnico II HB or SC?
I have a SD Jazz neck in my main guitar wich is a custom built solid body and I love the tone. I installed one shortly in a Squier tele experiment axe. Though I couldn't split it, I liked the tone there too, the tele snap was still there but with the warmth of a HB and clarity of the Jazz.
I had a Quarterpound tele bridge in there too and I removed it and sold it as fast as possible, didn't like that at all, too far from the tele tone in my opinion. I don't think you'll have problems to balance it with decent tele bridge pup, the Jazz isn't that hot anyway. How do you like the Alnico II's, are they HB or SC? I have a tele neck in my Tele (Fender) now with a SD Vintage 54 and I love it, it's got just the right balance of warmth and snap. Got a Broadcaster on the way too, seems to me a good match too. But I'm curious about the Alnico II HB tone. Fabien |

There are really 2 vintage bucker designs. One uses Alnico II mags while the other uses Alnico V mags. The Seth Lover, Antiquity, Alnico Pro II and Gibson 57 all are the Alnico II sounds. The more copied sound of the PAF styled pups appears to be the Alnico V tone. The SD 59, and most aftermarket pups go after that tone. It is usually a bit brighter. Edgier. The DH-1 had that vib as well. The Jazz does not appear to me to be a vintage PAF tone though it uses Alnico V mags. It appears to be almost SC in tone, much like the mini-bucker. My 2 cents. Dale |
