finally installed new pickups!
I've been ready to make the switch for a few weeks, but haven't had the time. I got a used 1995 MIM Standard that I've been looking to swap out some parts. AFAIK, it's got stock pickups (with the neck pup modified with a separate ground on the cover).
I got a new control plate and top-of-the-line components (CTS pots, etc...). I wired it up as a standard 3-way. For my neck pickup, I got a Fender MIM Classic from Guitar Parts Resource. For the bridge, I got a GFS Vintage Alnico 50 (I have this same pickup on my Squier and love it).
I soldered 2-inch leads where all the pickups would go in and used TINY wirenuts to connect the pickups. I got some horrible buzz at first and had to run a ground wire to the bridge (even though the Vintage 50 has a metal baseplate). Now it sounds clean and clear.
I'm still adjusting pickup height, but it sounds very toneful. I'm very pleased.
