Texas specials

My new CIJ 62 reissue came with texas specials. I love the guitar but the pickups dont seem to give good string balance. Any Ideas the B string is weak the high E isnt bad. From what I have heard these pick ups are supposed to be heavy on the mids This just seems excessive. If i cant get better balance then Im going to install a set of custom shop 57/62 p/u That would make the guitar more vintage sounding which is what i wanted in the first place. I just hate to mod It already.

have you changed strings yet? what settings are you using on your amp? the typical rap on tx specials is that they aren't twangy enough and are kinda hot. I'd be interested to know the above and what your tone knob is set at.

Have you tired adjusting the pickup height?

My mistake, I should have added more into the question... on the amp have you played with the treble and bass (or mids if the amp has that)? I have found with different guitars you have to adjust the equalization.

hmmm, your comment that the G is so much louder is interesting... it could be pickup height as TB said... it is strange that it is on BOTH pickups... you might try lowering the bass side of both pickups and see if that gets you what you need...

I, for one, love Tx specials, but like you initially had some balance issues. The problem is the funky magnet stagger in the design. That magnet under B is way low, while the high E magnet is jacked up. From what I read the design is intended to actually lend more balance and focus based on commonly played chords. I had to tweak my bridge p/up quite a few times to find the sweet spot, but once I did there is zero balance issues. Try raising the treble side of the pickup a bit and just lowering the low end a bit at the low E. Starting there you should be able to get there after a few adjustments. Regarding twang, well they wont do chickin' pickin' as good as some, but it's a fat twang, leaning towards P-90 almost. A few eq tweaks will get in you right into most country gigs with no problems. I dont find the mids to be harsh at all, rather I think they smooth things out just right, which to me actually balances things out better in the end.
