Dirtiest and raunchiest P90 bridge pickup for slide

Hello,

I have an Epiphone G310 Jr which I bought several years ago and have been upgrading quite a lot hoping to maximize its potential.

Have changed the bridge to a lightweight Wilkinson, the tuners to Gotoh, nut to Graphtech and cheap 6k no-name dogear to an 8,2k GFS.

It's amazing how good and mean a little plywood guitar can sound sometimes.

That being said I am going to use it for slide and am looking for the dirtiest, meanest and raunchiest P90 bridge pickup available, ideally dogear but soapbar will do.

Has to be cheap too ( no boutique ), think Hound Dog Taylor: I am really looking to overdrive that amp input without pedals :-)

Thank You

Fabrice

Too bad you're not willing to invest a few bucks. Jason Lollar will talk to you directly and wind up something that is exactly what you're looking for. He da man when it comes to P90s.

All the great P-90 tones I remember were stock pups.Leslie West of Mountain got some of the nastiest tones I've ever heard, and it was just a stock P-90.It's a marriage between the guitar and amp,not just the pup.

I'm going to try this myself with my Gibson Melody Maker RI, you might want to give it a go too but from what I hear wiring the pickup straight to the output gives a rawer and open sound to the pickup. I guess some frequencies get cut out from the resistance in the volume and tone. I'm going to give it a go with a cut off switch to help kill feedback between songs.

Check out Mighty Mite, GFS, Matchmaker & Gotoh for cheeeep P-90's.

For stellar toned P-90's, I agree 110% on the Lollar recomendation. Stunning P-90's.

Also, check out Benbo, ( Truetone ) Dave Stephens ( SD Pickups ) and Pete Biltof ( Vintage Vibe ) for killer P-90's.

Keep that GFS you already have in there. Great P90 no matter what the price.

Do you think one of these Lollar Chicago Steel pickups would fit in a P90 route?

Old cheesey amp

What you need is to find an old tube amp that was even cheap when it was made, I'm thinking a MOTS Magnatone , a Silvertone, Supro, or no name whatever you should be able to get under $150 and then drive it into submission with the PU you already have. Skip the pedals.

The Caddy of this group would be a tweed Champ.

And I also agree about the Lollars.

Very true, can't forget the amp. Like was said, a good cheapie might just be the ticket, something you can get good power tube break up with. I'm still say try wireing your pickup straight to the output. Leave the knobs intact and have everyone wonder how you get your sound heh. Going straight to the out put will give you a good dirty tone, I bet not much different then that Chicago Steel pickup.

I'd recommend the standard Gibson fare, then get yourself a low watt Tweed Fender clone (or build one, it's not hard at all - check my user's photo)...

Anything from the Tweed era is RAUNCHY as h e l l .

You looking for Elmore James or Hound Dog Taylor? You want primitive slide - go with a primitive amp.

I've got both Gibsons and the Seymour Duncan "Custom" P90. Never tried their "Hot" model yet...

Either one is perfect (I love the Gibsons), but the Custom is got an ugly little mid "hump" and plenty of primal scream if the old Gibsons aint what you're looking for.

Thanks a lot for all the replies.

Have to save some money first and I'll go for one of the pickups you guys suggested.

In the meantime I've maxed up the GFS P90 using an 1/8"
dogear spacer and that made a lot of difference.
