I have a genuine Gatton/Rubinowitz in one of my Teles. Kitchen magnets and a piece of old road sign for the blade. It sounds very "smokey" and doesn't have alot of high end. Great jazz pickup. I have no idea what it sounds like compared to a real one or a Lollar.

Redd's didn't sound dark or smokey to me. it sounded clear, airy, and bell-like.

Interesting. Redd said his was kinda smokey when I talked to him a few months ago when I was in Austin. Of course, it can brighten up withamp setting changes. It' just that it's kinda dark if you switch from a good sounding bridge postion to the neck position. In fact, Danny said the two didn't necessarily "play well" together. The middle position sounds fantastic though.

Somebody out there has one of mine that could comment on it, there are several dozen out there.
I have seen a couple other guys making them recently but they are not using the right wire gauge, its big wire with low DC resistance, thats where you get the fullness with clear top end, that and the magnet.
I could talk your ear off about it but it would be more believeable if someone else did that has one.
