Suhr SSC (silent single coil) system

not sure if this belongs here, or in the Strat forum.

I just ordered one of their backplates for my Suhr Classic S. I've heard the clips, read the reviews, and I'm pretty confident it will work as advertized.

Anyone here have experience with this?

There's a marvelously entertaining thread about this somewhere on here...

I've never heard it.

Holy crap! That got nasty. Too bad so much was said by so many who knew so little. Unfortunately there was very little useful information. I'll just keep this to myself when I install it. No sense in stirring the hive.

Do let me know how you like it though. I promise not to attack. 8)

Search over on thegearpage.com and you'll find some more useful info.

Just installed the SSC system on my Suhr Classic S. Works as advertised. I have not gigged with it yet, but I have comapered it with my other guitars at high volume at home. I cannot hear any difference in tone and the loud, obnoxious hum is gone. There is still a little hum left but no more than any of my humbucker equipped guitars.

Ok, I'm curious. Not a lot of description that I saw on the PDF from the web site. I take it the "stuff" is attached to the back plate. Did you have to compromise the guitar in and way? Is there a battery in it. Could you describe it a bit more? I'm not looking to trash it, I'm curious about how it works and fits in a guitar.

There was no alteration to the guitar. It is essentially an over-sized (by about 3/4") 3 ply trem cover with a very shallow route around/near the perimeter of the cover where the coil sits with two wires for connecting to the system.

There is also a tiny PC board, perhaps 3/4" x 3/4" with two micro pots on it and 6 wires. One wire goes to ground, three go to the ground wire of each p'up, and the remaing two get fed through the trem cavity ground wire hole to be connected to the backplate.

Once installed, you sit with the guitar in such a position as to cause the most possible noise. You then set the switch to the bridge p'up position and adjust the appropriate micro pot until you hear the greatest noise reduction. Then you switch to the #4, neck/middle position and adjust the second pot to further reduce the hum. The change is really quite startling but you will still hear some noise especially if you play with a lot of gain.

Once I had it adjusted, I tried some of my humbucker guitars alongside it to see how well it really works. The system is very good and reduced the noise down to the level of my humbucker equipped guitars.

I can detect absolutely no difference in tone after installing the system and playing at volume levels that were about to land me in divorce court.

The true test will be once I get it out on a gig this coming weekend. I'm not worried though. I'm pretty sure it's going to perform well.

The system delivers on it's promise!

Great tone and no noise. My friends were in awe as I stepped on the OD pedals and nary a hum was heard.

There were even a couple of my tone snob friends there who couldn't believe what they were hearing!

It was expensive at $250 but I now have killer vintage tone without the hum!
