Just got a tele, what year sound do I want?
Hi everybody, I just got a tele, actually a tele copy that i'm going to do some tinkering with, new neck, bridge, finish etc....and not sure what tone i'm looking for. Since I wind my own pickups i want to make sure I get the tone that is in my head and not waste a lot of time and wire getting the tone im looking for. My question is this, i'm looking for the tone that Allen Jacksons Tele player gets and or Brad Paisley. I know playing is a lot of it and amp choice, what im looking for is, model or year of telecaster, what type pickup, it's traits as far as tone goes and if possible the DC resistane of the pickup.
Thanks for any help. :D

Well, as you already know 90% of it is in the hands, but I would guess you'd be any type of good tele tone. The only thing similar between Brent Mason's and Paisley's tone is that they are both VERY compressed. Get a good compressor pedal to nail the Mason, and get a nice compressed EL84 amp to nail the Paisley.

Yeah Ben...hard to pin down as Brent Mason ( the tele player on AJ's records ) uses a Duncan Stack in the bridge and a strat pup in the middle so he can blend them. But, he's able to nail the tone ( hell, define the tone! ) of older teles ala Vince Gill and Steve Warnier. So, tough call. I'd opt for a more vintage wind though in the high 5's to mid 6's and try A3 mags. And please, keep in mind I have no idea what I'm talking about! If you want to send me aset for testing though, I'll be more than happy to oblige!!

I'll take you up on that one BB.
I have a tele bridge pickup I wound the other day for it and cant decide if thats what I want or not. The problem is the guitar. It's a tele clone, a samick of all things, got it real cheap. I hate the cheap bridge on it, it has issues of the strings having terrible dead moments due to the crap bridge, the saddles not sitting right, not contacting the bridge plate, the pickup route is made i guess only for samick pickups because a standard size pickup wont sit down in the cavity so it stays up close to the strings and i cant get a fair representation of the true sound of the pickup. I am going to make the route bigger, change bridges with a fender bridge i saved from a previous real fender i owned, wish i never sold that one. New electrics, new neck, etc... all the upgrades i can do to it. So yes I would be glad to let you test it out, if you like it we can work something out, if not send it back and we can try another, if you dont mind.
Take care and thanks. :)

However, Benbo is a killer winder himself. I've had the pleasure of trying one of his tele bridge pups ( thanks Larry! ) and man, it was GOOD! I also have one of his custom wound P-90's ( thanks again Larry! ) to sample as soon as I have time to cut a guard to fit. |
