does it matter...

if the pickup is mounted on the body or floating on the pickguard? I read once on a reputable pickup winders site (can't remember who now) that it doesn't matter. I've also heard otherwise.

What do you think?

Matt

I have it both ways...

I couldn't hear a difference.

I agree with JohnE

I have heard others say that the tone is better when screwed directly into the body due to the trasfer of vibrations from the wood to pup. I have ( as John has ) had a neck pickup screwed to the body and pickguard mounted on the same guitar. If there was a difference, these old ears certainly could not tell! Otheres will disagree and state otherwise...and they may be right! But for me.....no diff!

Yeah, there's a difference...

But only in that it's easier to adjust the truss rod with a pickup mounted to the body, cos the pickguard is easier to get off....

Soundwise, I don't think it makes any difference -- of course, I'm sure someone would argue this to the death. :D

I did hear a difference once

a SD Lil 59 humbucker in the wood seemed much basser then in the guard. I didn't like that PUP much either way, but I seemed to have more trouble balancing the volume of the 2 PUPs when the neck was body mounted.

About the only thing I might add is...

if the pickup has microphonic tendencies, and it's attached to the body, it would pickup those body vibrations better than a pickguard mount. Whether this is a desirable thing is open to debate. It seems logical to me that this would add something (however small) to the tone. One thing I'm sure of, a body mounted neck PU is cooler looking. Elegant, in a word.
