Best 52RI Pickups

Hey everybody;

I'm looking for replacement pickups for my 52RI but I can't make up my mind. I would like to get that great Keef tone on Honkey Tonk Women(best tone ever) with my SF Champ and I'm coming pretty close but the stock pickups are just a little to shrill. I'm thinking maybe the Bare Knuckle pickups but they are quite spendy. Also, does anyone have expierience with puting a humbucker in the neck?

Update

Hey Everyone

This is to let you know that I decided on the Bare Knuckle Country Boys. It turns out that they only cost me $125.00 from Solidbodyguitars.com in the twin cities area. That is considerably less than I thought and less than Lollars or Fralins. I'll let you know how they turn out.

What did you find lacking in the 52 RI pups? I have thought about trying those countless times, but never pulled the trigger. I figure my Lollar Vintage, and Fralin Blues Special probably cover similar ground. But, LOTS of people love the 52 RI guitar, and the stock pups.

Those Bare Knuckle pups get mentioned now and then, so I will be anxious to hear your thoughts. Plus, the price seems reasonable. Good Luck!

Cool....I'll be very interested to hear your take on the Bare Knuckles. I've followed the companies development from the get go. Although I've never heard a BK pickup, the user and magazine reviews have all been stellar.

I'd love the try the Stormy Monday bucker, Brown Sugar tele set and the ( ah hell...I'd like to try them all! ) Hank Marvin inspired strat set.

So many pickups....so little time.....and money!

So, please...give a shout when you have a chance on how they sound.

For bridge I'd like to put my vote in for the SD Broadcaster. I am so beyond happy with mine. A great pickup at a great price that seems often overlooked.

Pickup Issues

The reissue pickups are nice, I just thought I would try something different. The only gripe I have is that the bridge pickup was a little on the shrill side. I'm hoping the country boys have a little reedier or woodier character if that makes sense to you.

It's all about the Humbucker, personally I tried it a few times -- once with a Real 1965 Gibson , another time with a Seymour D Jazz, and another with a Seth Lover,

I really didn't dig it--untill I put in an 7.7K Antiquity-Duncan, but this one had it's aged magned changed out and a shorter full strength A-5 was put in.. this magnet came out of an J.B. Humbucker by SD.

I love it. it does that 59 Gibson thing well and I also put in a 10K 43 gauge coil wire bridge, these were made by Fender for a while a year or two ago and show up on ebay once in a blue moon.., they are known as the older 9.9k Broadcasters..the newer ones are 7.7K they sound close but the 10k just has more fire to it.
keith Richards uses these 43 gauge 10K pups with the PAF humbucker neck in all these Tele's he has made.

Bare Knuckles

I put in my new Bare Knuckle Country Boys last night and spent some time with them. My initial feelings are pretty good. They are lower output than the original 52RI's but I like that. The neck pickup is darker, not bassier or less treble, just darker. The bridge is awsome. It has lots of twang and treble but no shrill high end. Both of the pickups have lots of body. The woodiness that I was hoping for is definitely there.

The neck doesn't quite seem to fit right though. It has a slight forward lean caused by the pickguard pushing it forward. Is the only fix to modify the pickguard and whats the best way to do it?
