vintage-y: beyond SD '54

I changed out the stock pickups in my MIM Tele for SD '54 vintage pups. It really opened up the guitar, and did a lot of what I was hoping for - gave it that woody, warm tone that really felt and handled like guitar did acoustically.

But I'm starting to miss the growl and crunch. No matter how much I fiddle with the height and stuff, it's all clarity and twang, no growl, no crunch in the middle position.,

So I'm looking to not go too far afield. I like the clarity, the glassiness, the warmth and woodiness of the SD '54s, I'm just looking for something that's one step away from pure twang, to put one foot back in the growl.

Don't want to lose all the twang, though. Definitely don't want to go, say, p90-ish.

Suggestions?

Thanks!

Try a Duncan Broadcaster, STL-1B . I have a couple of them and while I haven't played the STL-1 '54 or the STR-1, from the descriptions and sound clips of the '54 I think the Broadcaster goes in the direction you want.

I'm actually headed in the other direction.

That is poetic.

Another option

The Alnico II pro is more of a 60's sound. A little punch, smoother, with twang. Will get creamy with some drive on the amp.

The Broadcaster is a fine pup. Works for country and rock. I found it more on the rock side than the country side. Gets narly with drive.
