As promised... GFS Info!

I got my new GFS Lil Puncher Neck today! I put it in my Kramer Classic III, which is like a Tele, but with a Floyd Rose Tremolo. I also have a GFS Lil HOT puncher in the bridge position. I believe the body to be Poplar, and the neck is Maple with Rosewood fretboard. Please be aware that this is a particularily dark sounding guitar. I have both pickups wired to a Switchcraft 3 way blade switch, and AllParts 500K Push-Pull Volume pot and an AllParts 500K Linear taper tone pot and a .022 cap. The push-pull splits both pups, leaving the rearward most coil activated.

In humbucking mode, the bridge model is like a hot PAF, just the right amount of sizzle and thanks to the brass baseplate, it has a generous helping of snap without any "twang" in the traditional sense. When split, it's a tad quieter, quite like most Tele singles I have heard and similar in tone, but like any humbucker, is not a perfect single, but it tries pretty hard. Probably the best split I've heard from a higher-output pup.

The neck, which is deemed "Modern Vintage" in humbucking mode is a dead-ringer for an older PAF. Clear and round with just enough edge to cut through. When split, it's identical to the Schaller pickup that came stock in the Kramer. It does the single coil thing perfectly, nice and Tele-ish... very buttery and round.

If you need a humbucker sound and a Single coil sound in the same guitar, you can't go wrong with these two. Especially for the price. Even if you pay full price from the GFS EBay store, you won't pay more than $90 for the pair, including shipping. It's really a great deal.

Here's pics:

I'm open to questions or comments!

[Moderator's edit: Trevor, please don't post (embed) any more photos of that size. There's a nice red note next to the box where you type your posts to remind you. Thx.]

Good for you! Personally, I did not care for the GFS Fatbody set I installed in my ASAT. I took them out after a week, and installed Duncans. Much more to my liking.

Fatbody? Hardly. A more fitting name would be "Hoover."

Is that this one ?
http://store.guitarfetish.com/casetcvililp.html

I've been looking at the "Vintage" 5.5K neck pup. I was hoping to hear a bit more about them. I've heard a bunch about the "Hot" ones but not much about the "Vintage". A lot of people seem to be down on the GFS stuff. For the price though I was thinking of giving it a shot.

Almost, I have this one: http://store.guitarfetish.com/lilhotpuhuov.html

and this one:
http://store.guitarfetish.com/lilpumvinepi.html

They're a bit hotter than the cool vintage. Works well for my "rockier" needs.

The key is to not put them in and expect them to sound like "Insert Boutique Pickup maker here"'s pickups. They have to be experienced for what they are; a well made budget pickup.
For me, I'm not a single coil kinda guy, but I love the way a Tele feels. I would have liked a DiMarzio FastTrack2T bridge and Pro-Track Neck, but they don't make a neck version and I'm not about to route out my Kramer for a bigger pickup, so it's perfect to me. I also really like the chrome blades. Matches nicely with the hardware.

For the price, you can't really go wrong. Also, I've tried to find GFS's used, but no one is selling them as far as I have found. Looks like a winner to me!

How about a clip or two? When both pups are on (middle position) are the balanced or is one a bit hotter?

cvansickle, I have a GFS Fatboy in the neck of my Squier 51 and it is great! Must be the Basswood??? Also have a GFSLiverpool in the bridge. Great pup too. I have some clips of them in 2 threads on my Squier 51 Modder Forum... http://www.instituteofnoise.com/squier51

Can you make an MP3? Try and make it at 128kps quality if you are able. If you can, keep the size down under 2Mb, you can email it to me and I'll host it for a short bit. My email address is in my profile. I'll then post the link.

Thanks Pinto, I was looking for something to put in the neck of my squier Tele Special. It has a bridge humbucker now, and a lame strat neck pup that's gotta go. The bridge pup isn't too hot (but sounds surprisingly nice) so I thought the vintage 5.5K may balance pretty well with it. I was thinking of trying to build a "noiseless" Tele with a splitter switch on the tone knob so I could still get the single coil sound off the neck when I needed it. How quiet are the ones you got ? Thanks.

lil puncher 01 cool

Glad you like your pups. I'm just waiting to get my Mij Paisley back which is having the cool punchers fitted.
Looking at your photo...the bottom string looks a little bit off of the blade?..is there any noticable drop in volume on that string?
John.

BUG: They're nice and quiet. even under neon lights.

John s: The angle of that pic isn't perfect. the string is over the end of blades, but not outside. The balance is very nice!

Pinto, here's your clip of the GFS Lil Puncher's. As a recap the neck is a Lil Puncher and the bridge is a Hot Lil Puncher.

MP3 comments... When you listen to the track, the cleans are done: Split neck on the left, Split bridge on right. Dirty rhythm is Bridge humbucking and the solo is done with the neck humbucking.

Amp is a Line6 AX2 using Marshall JCM800 Clean, JCM800 Dirty and Mesa Boogie Rectifier for the solo.

Here's the clip... http://download.instituteofnoise.com...il_puncher.mp3

Thanks for hosting the clip Andy!

Thanks for posting the clip Pinto and IoN. It's tough to tell from the clips on the guitarfetish site alone. There seems to be a pretty wide range of tones. Sounds very good for the price range. For $30 I think I'm gonna try the vintage neck, it sounds much better than what I've got in there now. Thanks.

I've hard a few of the GFS stuff now and in person they all seem to have this airy precense-like quality no matter the overall tone coming out of them. Not saying that's good or bad, but just an observation. Like you said for the money they are great. And like any pickup, the wrong combination of pup to wood will sound crappy.

Ordered my "cool vintage" neck pickup, and decided to check harmony-central to see if there were any reviews there. Check the last line of this review, in the comments. Made me spit a mouthful of beer on my monitor and keyboard. :)

i got the lil puncher in my newest project, today was the first run thruogh my regular rig, it was awesome, full on thruogh my ratt really sang split it was a real good OD tone, i will get the neck pup as soon as funds allow... i bought mine thruogh GFS website not off ebay, mainly because i didn't have to wait for an auction to end and also because it was only a 2$ diff from where said auction ended, yesterday a front pup auction ended for 2$s more than the website sells them for, is it just me or is this the goofiest thing you ever heard, i think i would at least set my max bid at what the store sells them for...some people...lol

Cool LIL Punchers

Have just tried my new pup's and am more than pleased with them. They manage to sound like a normal? Tele pup but have a very full sound but not like H/B.
I run through a Fender Twin..Custom 15 and they are perfect for the bender stuff. I like the fact that they are totally noisless . I would definately buy GFS again.

That's kind of what I'm looking for... I won a set of the Liverpools for $29 a pop, they're going into an Artcore small bodied ES-335 copy; I also won a set of 50's tele pups for $16 BUCKS!! I'll post the results after I get them loaded up...

You'll dig the Liverpools I think. Totally a vintage vibe and unbeatable for the price!

My GFS follow up "cool vintage" neck...

Well, I installed my "cool vintage" Lil Puncher neck pup Thursday night. It balanced perfectly with the 7 K bridge humbucker in my Squier Tele Special. I must say it is the best and fattest sounding "low budget" pickup I've bought. InstituteOfNoise hit it right on the head, the GFS's sound airy and open (there's no better words to describe it). In fact a friend I used to play with, called me last week to sit in on a small room mellow jazz kind of duet gig (background bar music where nobody really listens, he play bass a drum machine, and sings) Friday night. I brought my newly Bigsby'ed '67 Harmony Meteor, my only jazz guitar (really psyched to play it with the new Bigsby). I'm not really a jazz player, but it's just a bunch of 9th and 13th chord 12 bar blues the way we play it. I brought the Squier, my permanent backup guitar. At the start of the second set I started playing the Squier a bit (at 3/4 volume), and I couldn't put it down, the jazz tones off the neck sounded so cool ! The "cool vintage" is really FAT and HOLLOW, and incredibly quiet ! My only complaint is I wish it was a bit more microphonic like my old jazzbox sound, but I guess you can't have everything ! I can't wait until I get a gig where I can play on the bridge again (and at full volume), I think my Squier just became my most versatile guitar. I'm very happy with my $30 purchase. I'm now a GFS fan ! Just my $.02.

Anyone try the Lil Puncher 'Cool Vintage' rear pup??

How is it clean?? Any twang??
