Gatton's pups / Club Soda tape

Anybody know anything about these pups, or even trivial stuff about this particular gig itself? This is my favorite, because it's filmed right in front of him and his amp, and his playing here is very nice. I know J.B. made him all sorts of pups, including single-coils early on.

I have it from a VHS that I transferred to DVD, , and the color is such that I have to turn the knobs on my TV a bit. It's from '88 DC I think. Think he's playing a Super Reverb. I'll YT a clip.

There's a lot of whistling (guitar-wise,) think the reverb is up, might be a microphonic tube, maybe the treble is boosted a bit too, on his bridge it's slightly piercing at times, could be a number of things.

Aside from that, which is not too often, I find this performance my go-to-guitar-lesson 101. Very enjoyable, with the emphasis (and mix, thankfully) on the guitar. Even during Holloman solos, etc., the camera is still on Gatton, and you can see and hear his great backup rhythm work.

Correction, not Bill H. on the sax, this is a "Funhouse" era lineup, without Barry Hart on drums, Dave Elliot instead?

Correct me if I'm making any mistakes. Before the 2nd song of the 1st set, Gatton has some fun with them on the mic, and only a couple times through the show does the shot pan over to the left where most everybody is.

Great playing all-around.

Danny Gatton - Guitar
Billy Windsor - Guitar, Vocals
John Previti - Upright Bass
Dave Elliot - Drums
Bruce Swaim - Saxophone
Phil Berlin - Saxophone
Chris Battistone - Trumpet

John Jensen - Trombone - don't know if he is on this gig?

man, that sax player is smokin!

I like Gattons first solo, its nice and mellow and I can actually learn/steal from it. Second solo is too crazy/hard for me to steal anything, lol

looks like a boss delay on the amp?

Just seeing his positioning is really helpful for me. It also reminds you that through his Dad he really had that big-band swing in his blood.

Notice that he starts the 2nd set off with Bill Doggett's "Rambunctious," similar to G.R., also with a laid back swing feel on an R&B tune. Thats a great warm-up strategy.

You can literally see his fingers come to life, his minute adjustments, and most importantly I think his wonderful sense of humor and sense of fun in a bar setting.

Those are definitely regular double-blade Bardens. I don't know anything about that gig, other than that he played there fairly often. And his strings were .10-.13-.15.-26.-36.-.46. He would use a regular .10 set and swap out the G for a lighter one, because he liked the sound of 3rd string bends better that way.

Hope it helps,

CS

Thanks Chris S.! I also appreciate the string gauge info!

I am curious about the pickups because there are many variables with his equipment over time. For instance I love the Berkley shows w/ R. Gordon, and apparently those were s. coil.

I also like his sound here for the most part. Perhaps because of proximity with the camera microphone - it's right in front of his amp.

There are a lot of shows filmed further back where other things play a part. I love horns, (and all the musicians who played with Danny were phenomenal,) but if I was at a show I'd be up near the guitar players amp, Just me though.

I'm wondering whether the general "trebly" tone (associated with his amp settings and Barden bridge mainly), is heard by many here. Of course his amp was low enough that his ears didn't get as much highs, but I don't hear the thinness much here.

Super Reverbs (I believe that's what it is,) can be quite punchy and bright, and the reverb can be a little ringy if you turn it up past 2 pr 3 in my experience - It gets a little whistly and ice-picky (rarely) on the highest strings during his blues soloing, but that's not a bad tone to my ears.

I'd love to here your opinion, as you heard him first-hand many times if I am not mistaken? I only got to see hear him twice, and didn't know guitar stuff then.

Thanks again!

I don't think there's a lot about pups on here http://www.dannygatton.com/guitars.html, but it's pretty interesting.

I've often wondered about the setup of the pups on his 295. looks like the pole pieces are just about touching the strings!

This clip looks like it was from the same gig? Pretty incredible, Remington Ride, then into the Fingers on Fire tune from Humbler. Sounds like some Looney Tunes, polka, and fly zipping in there. They were having a ball!

Yep, this whole show is great! It's my favorite. Lots of laughs, Billy Windsor & the rest of the band are great, and D.G. is relaxed and in top form.

If a guitar player you know doesn't have tele fever yet, this is the show that gave it to me.

There's so many great moments on here, this is why D.G. is my favorite.
