Tele pickup question
Hi,
I'm looking to put a SD Broadcaster in the bridge and a Twang King in the neck of my tele, but am a little confused when it comes to hum-canceling and pickups being out of phase (Fender/Duncan combos) in the middle position. Does the same apply with a DiMarzio/Duncan combo? My understanding is that the DiMarzio/Duncan combo will be in phase but not hum-canceling in the middle position? Wouldn't that also mean they are out of phase? Any help is greatly appreciated! |

One pickup to another can be in phase. To be hum cancelling, ONE of the two needs to be reverse polarized AS WELL AS reverse connected.
So how they are connected is not really an issue as far as having them in phase. If you want hum-cancelling, that's another deal. |

For practical purposes, easy. Wire them in, and find out if they're in phase. If both together sounds really quiet and nasal, you're out of phase. While you're at it, find out of the hum is getting canceled (for future reference).
If you're out of phase, you'll have to swap the leads on one of the pickups, and you'll have to make sure there's a separate ground wire for the neck pickup cover or the bridge pickup base plate if there isn't one already. I prefer grounding the neck cover myself. Now you should be in phase. If it's also hum canceling, great! If not, no big deal, some say it actually sounds better. If you then REALLY want it to be hum canceling, it's doable, but requires some strong magnets to change the polarity. |
