HD Chromotone neck pups?
The earlier post about whether Harmonic Design pups were fading in popularity got me wondering about the "new" HD pup -- the "Chromotone" neck pup. I'm thinking of doing a Mark Jenny-like partscaster version of a nocaster and thought this looked like a nice neck pup for that purpose. I've always liked HD pups in general.
Anybody tried them out? |

I'm surprised nobody else has tried it. If you're familiar with Scott's 54 Specials, I believe the chromotone is just the neck version with a thin nickel silver chrome cover. So, if you need to have a chrome cover, the chromotone is awsome and has a bit more volume, punch, clarity, and bandwidth compared to normal tele neck pups. I have one and tried to get along with chrome cover because it looked cool. In the end, I needed a more raw and less jazzy tone, so I pulled off the cover and now essentially have a 54 special with exposed pole pieces. Scott shrink-wraps his coils in plastic, so there was no potential for damage. I wish Scott still offered the normal 54 spcial with the black plastic cover, but he'll be the first to tell you that he made the chromotone mostly out of public demand for a chrome-covered neck pup.

Al, I bet that Scott would install a black plastic cover for you, they are just glued on. I've done that twice, where I had a white cover pup, and wanted black. I think he charged me $10 or $15, including postage. He will not send a cover though, he wants to see the pickup, as I don't think he wants the covers out there potentially installed on other pickups. I'd email him.
