Broadcaster pup question........
Can anyone here tell me the difference between a SD Broadcaster STL-1B and the Fender Broadcaster pup that's in my Baja?
I'm shoppin' bridge pups for a mim standard that Im upgrading. Baja is staying stock. I put a Dimarzio Twang King in another mim last week for a guy thinking it was gonna be the shiz and although it was an improvement over the stock mim pup, it wasn't life changing at all. I want this mim to smoke it. Already put a 3 saddle on it. Im looking at SD Broadcaster SD vintage 54 maybe a STL-2 Hot lead? I have a Hot rails in my USA Tele but I don't want 2 Teles with the same pup...... So really, I already have a Hot rails, and the Broadcaster in the Baja. Help ! Thanks for the help.

Funny you should ask - I'm changing my Baja pickups too.
The Duncan Broadcaster, from what I've heard, won't be as hot and will be even more vintage sounding. It'll still rock though. In fact, I've seen guys try out the Twisted Tele neck with the Duncan Broadcaster, and they dug it. I'm between a Dimarzio True Velvet/Pre B-1 pairing or a Duncan Vintage Rhythm/Broadcaster or '54. I like the lively tone of the '54 but it might not pack as much of a punch like the Broadcaster. Hoping someone can chime in that's used both in similar situations. |

Here you go:
http://www.tdpri.com/forum/just-pick...oadcaster.html From what I can tell, these pickups are pretty different. Fender Broadcaster: AlNiCo 5, 43AWG, about 9k Duncan Broadcaster: AlNiCo 5, 42AWG, about 7.6k Hopefully someone can say how they compare sonically |

The Duncan Broadcaster has a great middy bark (think Keef) with a basically vintage tone. Not a ton of output. The Duncan '54 is thinner and twangier. The Duncan Hot Tele has about 15-16k of wire and is WAY over the top--not in the same league as the others. (I have a hot tele in a MIM tele with a Duncan '59 neck bucker for those times when I WANT to be over the top. But I have 5 or 6 teles...) My original Hamer T-51 has a Duncan Broadcaster in it and it is *perfect* for an all round tele with some vintage flavor that knows how to rock.
If you want a smokin' pickup with a vintage vibe but some more push, might I suggest the Rio Grande Muy Grande. That is a long time favorite of mine. (I have one of those too, and a Harmonic Designs Vintage Plus set, which is also rawkin' but more modern sounding.) George |
